In the lead-up to this year’s Lib Dem autumn conference in Bouremouth, Lib Dem Voice is conducting a survey of our Forum for party members on the recent political and economic crises – asking about what you think, and also your perception of how the party has dealt with them.
The survey has been designed jointly with the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr), to tie-in with a conference fringe event on the theme, ‘The end of politics as we know it?‘, (1pm, Tue 22 Sept) with a panel comprising Ming Campbell, Shirley Williams, Charles Clarke and, erm, me. Carey Oppenheim, ippr’s co-director, has written an article explaining more, to be published here on LDV on Monday.
The survey includes questions on the MPs’ expenses scandal, the party’s stance on electoral reform in the event of a ‘hung parliament’, what the Chancellor should do in the next budget, and the party leadership’s response to the recent political and financial crises. The final section – separate from the ippr’s survey – asks for opinions on the current standings of the Lib Dem shadow cabinet.
The survey – a link to which has been emailed to all signed-up members of LDV’s forum – should take only 5-10 minutes to complete, and your responses are anonymous. All the results will be published on Lib Dem Voice: to see the results of our previous surveys, please click here.

The end of politics as we know it? With Charles Clarke, Shirley Williams and Ming Campbell? Some mistake surely?
Very pleased to have the chance to respond to this survey. Only one small point to make: I felt sorry for the new Chair of the Campaigns and Communications Committee, Willie Rennie, who has been in the job for no more than a few hours but whose performance is about to be assessed!
But, if it was thought important to add him to the list, why no similar review of the Chair of the General Election Campaign which has reverted to being a different person and an office in the gift of the Leader?
Although the former is elected and the later is not, it is the Chair of the General Election Committee that actually matters at this time of the electoral cycle.
Willie who has been campaigning in the party for many years, has helped many Lib Dems get elected and then quite deservedly got himself elected. Willie is tried, tested and respected as a Liberal Democrat campaigner.
