All very well but Nichol Steven is doing a one man job of destroying the LibDems in Scotland, and his number two Tavish Scott is seriously illiberal and wont do any better. The LibDems have been polling in single figures in some polls in Scotland recently. The assasination of Charles didn't help much.

"Finally, as a Christmas treat, here are the previous December poll averages for the parties over the past decade:"

The sad thing is that it was a Christmas treat for me! Thanks and compliments of the season!

What was the picture the last time May's local election seats were up for grabs? I guess I am asking: which parties will be fighting from a high base (with much to defend) and which from a low base (with much to gain)? Thank you.

Apsolutely right. We have avoided the kind of collapse we had into single figures when the liberal sdp Alliance broke up after 1987. We have stupendous momentum and are raring to go, because those of us on the ground think we can win a lot of seats.

Eh, lad 16% is luxury. Back in the late '70s we were on 4%, came 4th behind the National Front in by-elections, and David Steel would beat us to death with rolled up copies of the manifesto :-)

Seriously though, the interesting thing is despite Labour having a really bad time of things the Tories are still 'only' on 42%. If Cameron was going to win the next election the Tories should be over 50% by now, given the general tendency for a swing back to the Government in the heat of an election.
