Should Lib Dems want Labour defectors to join us?

The Telegraph suggests that “senior” Labour MPs and peers are considering breaking away from their party in disgust at Gordon Brown’s leadership and fear of a lurch to the left. Talks are apparently afoot to convince them to become Liberal Democrats. As usual with unattributed stories, it is impossible to tell whether there is any basis to the newspaper’s speculation – or whether it is entirely unfounded.

But assuming for a moment it is true, some will be tempted to question whether the party should welcome defectors from Labour. I’ve previously outlined why I don’t subscribe to the view …

Brown Routed By Gurkhas: Reaction (Updated)

Today’s historic victory for the Gurkhas and an historic defeat for Gordon Brown has already been chronicled by our own Alix Mortimer. Here is the Channel 4 News report:

Nick Clegg’s superb performance at today’s PMQ already won him rave reviews, as our Alex Foster noted.

Other mentions in dispatches for the role Nick Clegg played in forcing this issue:

“Credit in particular to Nick Clegg” – The Telegraph’s Benedict Brogan

“the Liberal Democrats can feel justifiably pleased that their long game has truly paid off” – BBC’s Gary

Nick Clegg spells out his dedication to reforming expenses system

In an interview now available through the BBC, Nick Clegg spelled out to Newsnight his dedication to reforming MPs’ expenses. He quite rightly notes the chaos over reform just looks like “rats fighting in a sack” to a public wanting transparency and clarity.

Will Lib Dem MPs be shamed in July’s receipts apocalypse?

The Daily Mail is speculating that at least one senior Lib Dem MP will be caught up in the expected criticism of MPs’ expense claims, when receipts are published in July. The newspaper reports here that Nick Clegg has been asked for an assurance by a front-bencher that there will be no sackings for Lib Dems embarrassed by their published expenses; an assurance Nick apparently refused to give.

Whether there is any truth to this gossip remains to be seen. Earlier today, Political Betting’s Mike Smithson suggested that the Lib Dems could be winners, particularly in London, given …

Lib Dem PPC defects to Tories

News reaches us via Conservative Home and the Telegraph that Norsheen Bhatti, the Liberal Democrat PPC for Chelsea and Fulham, has defected to David Cameron’s party.

It is odd that Tory Chairman (and Lib Dem Voice favourite) Eric Pickles suggested to The Telegraph that the environment was one area where his party shares Liberal Democrat values. As the paper notes, Ms. Bhatti’s own website was criticising the Tories’ sabotage of the Lib Dem bill against fuel poverty only last month.

Ms. Bhatti’s move comes hot on the heels of news that Tory A-List candidate Beverly Nielsen has …

DNA Database Scientist Slams Labour’s Register of the Innocents

Professor Alec Jefferys, the scientist who developed ‘genetic fingerprinting’ to use DNA in criminal cases, has criticised Labour’s use of a database to hold samples from the innocent. He told the BBC:

My concern is that the way the database is now being populated by increasingly innocent people – and getting hard numbers on this is difficult.

I’ve seen figures as high as 800,000 entirely innocent people on that database. My concerns, which were very much reflected in a recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, is that this is a real violation of an individual’s privacy.

Currently, the police …

How much are Britain and the USA in love?

Does a partnership trump a relationship? How many of each is a kinship worth?

Michael Scherer, of Time magazine’s Swampland blog, has been bemused at British press obsession with Obama’s omission of the phrase ‘special relationship’ last month. Now he is bemused by the proliferation of metaphors used in the President’s joint press conference with Gordon Brown today.

Is anger against the bankers distracting politicians from “real help now”?

It was inevitable that the economic crisis would dominate Barack Obama’s first year – and probably first term – as President. This month, Obama is reaching a decisive moment in his struggle to restore faith in the US economy. After some shaky starts, he has seen the stock market rally in response to a policy of not nationalizing failing banks. The New Yorker’s recent editorial provides a fantastic analysis of why Obama may be correct to disappoint economists on his left, and how his focus – in the short-term – is less on regulation to stop irregularities recurring in …

Ex-Lib Dem Postmaster joins UKIP

Deva Kumarisiri, the postmaster who introduced a controversial policy against customers who spoke poor English, has joined UKIP and, the BBC reports, will stand for them in the European elections. He has apparently found a kindred soul in that party’s leader, Nigel Farage.

Regular readers will recall that Mr. Kumarisiri was once a Liberal Democrat councillor.

Brown and Queen discuss succession question raised by Dr. Evan Harris

The BBC report that the Prime Minister and advisors to Her Majesty The Queen have met to consider whether they would endorse reform of Britain’s laws of succession to the throne, which were decided by the 1701 Act of Settlement. Lib Dem MP Dr. Evan Harris has tabled a Private Member’s Bill on the subject, aimed at ending discrimination against women and Roman Catholics in the hereditary succession. Could this mean that Evan’s bill will meet a better fate that David Heath’s bill?

UPDATE: It seems not. The government are not backing Evan’s bill.

Heath’s Fuel Poverty Bill Fails in Commons

Lib Dem MP David Heath’s private member’s bill to provide help for those suffering from fuel poverty fell in the House of Commons this afternoon. It required 100 votes to pass, which it lacked thanks to the absence of most MPs and the opposition of government whips.

The full list of those who did turn up to vote is available in the “Today in the Commons” section of Parliament’s website, which provides information before the online publication of Hansard the following day.

Amongst those 89 MPs who did bother to turn up and vote for effective measures against fuel poverty, …

Daily Mail praises Lib Dem councillor’s day job policy against non-English speakers

The Daily Mail rarely devotes its columns to the praise of Liberal Democrat councillors. Deva Kumarasiri is an exception. The newspaper approvingly reports on a policy he has introduced in the Post Office he manages: Mr. Kumarasiri will not serve people who don’t speak English because, he believes, they ought to learn it, as he has since emigrating to Britain 17 years ago. The paper says,

If his customers can’t be bothered to learn English, he tells them, they must go away and learn it before he serves them.

His bold stand against non-integration has sent a shudder of

Government pledge help for mental health during recession

I read on the BBC website that the government will commit new money to mental health provision – always a Cinderella service – in anticipation of more people needing help during the economic depression.

As Tory MP Andrew Lansley says in that report, this is great news. But he couldn’t help but add that the government was following Conservative policy in doing this – presumably referring to his speech on the issue in November 2008.

If we were to be equally petty, we might point to another politician who raised this a month before Lansley …

Labour renews efforts to undermine UK universities

Just after students from outside the EU have became the first guinea pigs for Labour’s inane and insane national identity scheme, they have been hit with more red tape from Westminster.

Students pursuing degree programmes in Britain will need to re-apply for a visa every four years, removing a guarantee that they would be permitted to stay for the duration of their course.

At a time when higher education institutions are struggling to compete internationally, this is about as welcome for British universities as Evan Harris at a Daily Mail Christmas party. Diane Warwick of Universities UK warns:

Suppression of Torture Evidence

Maverick Tory MP David Davis today raised, in the House of Commons, an explosive question which requires immediate answers. It follows a High Court judgement in which British judges lamented they were unable to publish evidence of human rights abuses in the case before them, because the US had threatened it would cease cooperation with Britain.

Questions must also be raised as to the repeated assertions of Tony Blair, Jack Straw and numerous other Labour officials that Britain was not complicit in torture (as detailed, with sources, here).

It is suggested that the suppression of evidence comes because of a …

The Democrats could get a super-majority yet

During last year’s US elections, Democrat supporters weren’t just watching the margin by which Barack Obama beat John McCain. They were also hoping to see their party gain 60 seats in the United States Senate. While they were assured of a majority, 60 votes are necessary to override “fillibusters” – speeches by opposition politicians that go on so long that a law never comes to a vote. With a 60 senators or more, the Democrats would be able to avoid these stalling tactics by passing a motion moving to a vote.

Democrats picked up the seats they wanted in North Carolina, …

Liberalism in a word

The ever-insightful Timothy Garton Ash was the author of an intelligent article in The New York Times last week, which considered the international fate of the word “liberal”. His stimulus is Obama’s inaugural address last week, which has already been debated on Lib Dem Voice. The speech was, in the historian and writer’s opinion,

in substance, a blend of classical constitutional and modern egalitarian liberalism. The thing, but never the word. Anyone who knows anything about contemporary political discourse in the United States understands why.

He concludes,

I don’t expect Mr. Obama to use that word any time soon. But

A Romance with Labour? Say No to Hugs

This week’s New Statesman features a startling article by the Fabian Society’s Sunder Katwala, suggesting a pre-election coalition between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

Rather than speculating on the party’s intentions in a hung parliament – which has become the sport of hostile journalists keen to misrepresent our MPs’ pronouncements – he is advocating this as a desirable course of action. It would be impossible, Katwala accepts, for the Lib Dems to prop up a discredited Labour government after Gordon Brown had lost a general election. He suggests averting a plurality of Tory MPs completely by a revolutionary cooperation between …

LDVUSA: Dreams and Symbols – but what’s next?

There’s a time and place for the tiredest platitudes, as we feel the hand of history on Obama’s shoulder.

Human beings have a soft spot for symbolism. Modern societies make much of round-numbered anniversaries, as opportunities to focus on the past and look to the future. It helps us make sense of our world, and to create narratives that render infinitely complex human histories comprehensible. Today, we are doing something slightly different. All around the world, people are stopping to note the inauguration of Barack H. Obama as America’s next President. Already, everyone is keen to proclaim Obama’s presidency as ‘historic’ …

Will Obama take the green road to recovery?

An interesting article in The New Republic asks whether Obama will lead the USA into the economic equivalent of a world war to stem national and global depression. Strikingly, it advocates investment in green jobs as the front on which that war could be fought: the same front, of course, where Nick Clegg deployed the Liberal Democrats, with his ‘Green Road To Recovery’.

Here’s an extract from the article:

One area that is ripe for such investment–and that is not, from what I have seen, a declared priority of the Obama administration–is high-speed rail. Amtrak’s Acela trains–the closest thing

Get Your Obama Merchandise Here

The BBC have reported on Marvel’s promotional Spiderman comic, in which the web-slinging wonder saves the comic-collecting Presidential Elect from a nefarious inauguration day plot. Meanwhile, vendors also offer Obama trading cards and the man himself touts a new range of fashion accessories.

Those looking for some Nick Clegg mugs and other merchandise should scour Lib Dem Image.

Proposition 8: The Editorial and the Musical

LDV has previously mentioned California’s vote to ban gay marriage. The New Yorker has an article (one I find unduly rude towards Mormons’ own history in making its point), suggesting Prop 8 will be the last stand for homophobia in the USA:

Like a polluted swamp, anti-gay bigotry is likely to get thicker and more toxic as it dries up… This sort of sludge may or may not prove to be of some slight utility in the 2012 Republican primaries, but it is, increasingly, history … “We believe all families matter and we do not believe in discrimination,” Barb Young said. “Therefore, our family will vote against Prop 8.” It wasn’t enough this time. But the time is coming.

Meanwhile, less seriously, a group of comedians and performers have provided their own musical, interpreting the voters’ choice.

Olbermann on California’s Proposition 8

On the same night as celebrations of Barack Obama’s historic victory two weeks ago, there was the troubling rejection of existing recognition of gay marriage in the state of California by voters there.

Many LDV readers will be familiar with Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC news anchorman, whose on air editorials on progressive issues seek to counter-balance those of the right-wing Fox News. Here’s his latest “special comment” on the issue.

Pilot of ID Cards may cause pilot strike

Could it be that British summer holidays cancelled by striking pilots will ultimately sink the ID card scheme? Labour’s cardboard coercion may yet be grounded on the runway of Manchester airport; at least, we can hope.

The Indie reports that resistance is growing to government plans to pilot ID cards on, erm, pilots. Staff at Manchester and London City airports, along with overseas students, are among the groups being targeted first for Labour’s laminated gifts of joy.

The British Airline Pilots Association is threatening strikes and the airline bosses, of the British Air Transport Association, are also annoyed that their staff …

The Other Party Elections

Lembit to Ros: “I’m with you all the way”

Lembit Opik, the runner-up in the Lib Dem presidential election, has issued this gracious response to the result and explained his plans for the future:

I congratulate Ros for her clear victory. If Barack Obama had employed Ros Scott as his campaign manager, he’d have won by even more than he did! As a seasoned local government campaigner Ros has reflected and represented the needs of the Party. Her insights are things which she can now put into practice. I know she will do her absolute best to achieve exactly this.

Chandila Fernando ‘the Troubleshooter!’ has impressed a huge number of people with his strategic look at what the Party does well and how it could do better. His outspoken mission to introduce a more professional and externally orientated approach is tremendously valuable and we need to see how best to implement his suggestions.

I thank my team for a clear, honest and genuine campaign. We got on with the job of putting forward our proposition, and what we intend to do for the Lib Dems. We kept it positive and we ‘kept it real.’ The best way I can pay you back is by living up to your political expectations as we pursue our inspiring agenda within the Party.

Obama heads to the West Wing

As President-elect Obama picks his cabinet and administration, leaks suggest Rep. Rahm Emmanuel (D-Ill.) will be his Chief of Staff. After the inspiration for The West Wing’s Matt Santos has tapped the guy Josh Lyman was based on, can it be long before George Stephanopolous (aka Sam Seabourn) is recruited as Emmanuel’s deputy? Probably less likely is McCain (aka Arnie Vinick) being invited to be Secretary of State.

An Endorsement

“He has proved both his ability and his integrity; he has had experience enough in public affairs to make him a statesman, and not enough to make him a politician. That he has not had more will be no objection to him in the eyes of those who have seen the administration of the experienced public functionary whose term of office is just drawing to a close.”

That’s a quote from a magazine as it endorsed the less experienced candidate, who came from Illinois, in a presidential election – but not this one.

Which websites will you be checking on Tuesday night?

For eager consumers of US Presidential election news, the climax is approaching: on Tuesday night, we’ll get to watch the results of the epic clash between John McCain and Barack Obama. Which websites will Lib Dem Voice readers consider invaluable to following the dynamics of the election as it unfolds, or tracking House and Senate races, as we watch the TV coverage?

Here are my three suggestions:

1. Real Clear Politics is a hive of polls and punditry, with links to the most important stories.
2. Politics Home, the British imitator of Real Clear Politics, has good US coverage of its …
