With apologies for posting three stream-of-conciousness style comments where one better considered one would certainly be better, I wanted to mention that I have linked to this very interesting blog post from both the Facebook and MySpace sites:

I've done a little digging and here's what I found. According to RoSPA, road humps slow down traffic and save lives. This appears to confirm my suspicion that Coleman's policy is driven by (surprise, surprise) populism. and self-promotion. Here's what the people at ROSPA said to the BBC:

"We would be very concerned at any measures to the detriment of road safety. Speed bumps have been shown to reduce accidents and if they do any damage to a vehicle or the occupants it is because they were travelling too quickly in the first place," says Rospa's Roger Vincent.

And here's the facts according to RoSPA:
Hit by a car at 40mph, 9 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed
Hit by a car at 30mph, about half of pedestrians will be killed
Hit by a car at 20mph, 9 out of 10 pedestrians will survive

Brian 'Mr Toad' Coleman's opposition to everything that might impede the motor car is well documented on that same Wikipedia page (and seems likely to be the main cause for his nickname).

A couple of further points worth mentioning:

1. Coleman was caught by a speed camera exceeding a 30mph speed limit in Borehamwood in January 2006 (susequent to the road hump removal I assume). He already had 9 points on his driving licence. On 9 August 2006 at St Albans Magistrates' Court, Coleman was given three points on his licence, banned from driving for six months and fined £300. He's been getting cabs at our expense ever since running up well over £10,000.00 in taxi bills - despite having a free travelcard (also at our expense).

2. Last year, he forced through a new road scheme to be built across a primary school playing field (Metropolitan Open Land adjoining the Green Belt). Rather than debate the environmental and planning merits of the scheme, he chose instead to use a straw man, effetively labelling local parents and environmental campaigners - his constituents mark you - as a bunch of racists.
