Geoff

Sadly the biggest pile of nuclear weapons are already in the wrong hands - the greatest war monger of our time - George Bush's America

I agree with Nick Clegg that Pakistan has lost a great leader in Benazir Bhutto. And that the quest for a Democratic government in Pakistan has been dealt a severe blow

We must not forget that Pakistan's geographic position is the reason that the US and Britain have an interest in what happens there.

I fear that so long as Pakistan is run by a dictator it will suit America. A democratic government may not be quite as willing as an individual to dance to George Bush's tune

In my heart I agree with Nick Clegg. However I am greatly concerned that 1) Pakistan is a nulcear power and 2) whenever Pakistan has been a democracy in the past it has always been unstable, and is showing serious signs of becoming so again.
I loathe the "realpolitics" that justifies supporting dictators, but the first priority in the interests of the world is to stop nuclear weapons getting into the wrong hands. From a Liberal point of view the policy options available in Pakistan are simply impossible! Can we really support democracy if it makes more likely what we least want?
