Conference: Glee Club

You’ll be pleased to hear we are able to draw a veil over most of Glee Club because we were, happily, not there.

But one little vignette has come our way. While the crowd were waiting, all agog, for Lembit and his Magic Harmonica, a couple of Ros Scott acolytes began light-heartedly chanting “I’m 4 Ros, I’m 4 Ros.”

Lembit, getting in drinks for everybody, aimed a mock scowl at the audience. “Now, if you keep doing that he’s not going to play,” warned the compere.

Cue entire audience: “I’M 4 ROS! I’M 4 ROS!”

I was thehre and can confrim that about half the hall were chanting “I’m 4 Ros”. Lembit looked irritated at first, but he took it in good part.
He’s actually a very good Harmonica player, a better second job for him than Party President I think!

I was also there, and even as a supporter of Ros’s campaign I thought the chanting was a bit misplaced in Glee Club, where the ribbing that goes on is usually more good-natured than the chanting felt and Lembit, as a long-standing contributor to the event, deserved a warmer welcome. I thought it was a relatively small group of mostly very drunk people who were responsible, though – certainly not half the hall.

I wasn’t there, and am kind of glad that, as a pretty visible Ros-ite, I wasn’t. I would have been very uncomfortable about that. I do actually LIKE Lembit, I just don’t think he’d be a better president than Ros…

The chanting made me go and get an “Ipik Opik” badge and put it on.

Indeed. In fact one of his claims to fame is that he played harmonica in the Culture Club classic Karma Chameleon.

I don’t know, I was there and thought it was quite light hearted. He did turn round and flick a V-sign (in jest) at those chanting before heading to the bar. I think it was bigger than a small group, but smaller than half the audience.

I was one of the chanters and it was a bit of fun. He should have expected it though, and I’m told he was advised not to go. Everyone who participates in that spectical should expect the worst.

The chanting was yobbish and hostile. It reminded me of Lord of the Flies. Lembit will appear at the bottom of my ballot paper, but he didn’t deserve to be treated how he was.
