Thought provoking stuff, Mark. I'm one who firmly believes our campaigning should have a strong intellectual rigour to it; I don't think a message should be diluted or reduced to easy soundbytes (we can leave that to New Labour) but your essential point is very true.

The key question is how to effectively put out a clear, distinctive and concise message. I suppose it would help if, as in the case of Lincoln, it is the commentators who are particularly receptive!

The Gettysburg Address given by President Abraham Lincoln 19/11/1863 contained the final cry `that Government,by the people, for the people, shall not perish on earth'.

In Britain it is only the Liberal Democrats who will bring Government ,by the people, for the people, that will not perish on our earth.

John: if you contact ALDC they can supply some good examples of literature to get ideas from.

jb / Matthew: it's a balance. My point was to highlight the daftness of those who insist almost as a matter of principle that you've got to write at length to get anything other than a trivial idea or piece of information across. Dumbing down is certainly something to be guarded against, but so too is verbosity that flows from flabby thinking or sloppy writing.

David: I don't think so and I've just checked the information, so what's your source for the contrary information? Happy to then cross-check the different sources.

Today, Edward Everett is getting a little more deserved attention. He was, indeed, a remarkable individual and does not deserve to be forgotten.. There's a new book available -- "The Eloquence of Edward Everett -- America's Greatest Orator" (2009) by Richard A. Katula. Check it out!

Dear Mark,
Are you sure the address before Lincoln's wasn't given by Henry Ward Beecher ? Another historical quirk is that Lincoln's ultra short address was belittled at the time, the newspapers were scathing eg "the silly, dishwashy utterance by the man called president" !
By the way, a while ago you referred to F.Craig's collection of election results - I possess the volumes. You mentioned your Ph.d was related to them - what was it on? I'm a retired academic mathematician (applied) since interested in psephology so please don't mistake me for a statistician!
Best wishes, David Poole

You can sometimes do it by putting the message you want everyone to get in the headlines, while using words which you know most of those who get it won't read, but a few will appreciate.

In general, our party's success in developing new styles of effective letterbox literature has been very positive, but I agree it can sometimes slip into just simplistic soundbites and pictures. I think we should be looking at ways of moving on from that with the long-term aim of generating a more committed core support who appreciate us as a serious party with serious aims and objectives.

Yep. That's what we need: more sound bites. None of this long, boring political stuff. Large colourful fonts, a few pictures, and not too many words; that's the way to go.

Somewhat surprisingly Lincoln was never meant to be the main speaker of the day - which may explain the differences in length. I'd recommend Garry Will's book Lincoln at Gettysburg to you mark.
