I doubt if Ken Clarke wants the grind; and who else does Cameron have? He is sticking to the imp he knows, for fear of something worse.

Well the difficulty for the Tories can be summed up in the Sarah Palin question; what did you actually do to press for more regulation of financial insitutions when the economy was booming?
Thank goodness the Liberal Democrats have a much better record on this.

The trouble for Dave would very much be the threat of being out-gravitas-ed by anyone worth the political embarrassment of moving them in.

Personally I've always thought that Ken Clarke would be a canny choice. After all, I was relieved when he dropped out of the race for Tory leader; had he won, I might have had to think about voting Tory (a very uncomfortable prospect).

Of course, the fact that Clarke has proven himself so fundamentally un-electable to an electorate composed only of Tories is all the reason you need in the world *not* to vote for them.

So, yeah... I think you're correct that the only reason Cameron doesn't do it is because there isn't a great replacement who wouldn't upset someone.

As for Hague: Why on earth would he do that?

I don't think Cameron can sack Osbourne - he knows where the skeletons are buried (or at least has photographic evidence)

Your rhetorical question was a good washing line on which to hang out an amusing set of Osbourne's shortcomings; but don't for goodness sake encourage the tories to ditch him because he serves as a good contrast to our front bench economists, any of whom would be more convincing.
We can be pleased to have Vince, Chris Huhne, David Laws and Susan Kramer to speak for us and they do make Os look like the school prefect; his shadow Treasury Secretary looks more grown-up.

Bravo. Of course an overpromoted number one needs an overpromoted number two. How would Cameron look if his treasury bod had oodles more substance and gravitas than himself. He tried that with the home office, and look what happened.
