Labour refunds illegal donation from charity

Written by Mark Pack on 6th September 2008 – 4:15 pm

All rather bizarre (charity not noticing that it was making a political donation, Labour Party not noticing that it was taking money from a charity):

Labour was embroiled in a fresh row over donations last night after it was forced to pay back £15,000 to a children’s charity which illegally donated cash to the party.

Catz Club, which has received lottery money to run breakfast and after-school clubs across Britain, paid the money to attend Labour’s star-studded fundraising sports dinner this summer. But it was forced to ask for the money back after the Conservatives uncovered the donation and told the Charity Commission. (The Independent)

Good job they were caught on because they would not have paid it back

  • Anonymous Says:

According to the FT quoting Labour, the Electoral Commission sad the donation was permissible (under PPERA), but the Charity Commission said it was not permissible under Charity law. Labour should have known about the charity rules, and should have known it was a charity when they performed their due diligence on he donor.

The Catz Club charity is teetering on the brink of insolvency. Funny that they can afford a donation in these circumstances.
