Mr Brown is right: specialist biological facts are not something that everyone is expected to know.

But ordinary mental arithmetic is, and that's what we have here. Eleven-year-olds used to answer that sort of question with ease. But GCSE Candidates.......?

<I>"First up is Ed Balls ... here he completely out-smarts tongue-tied Tory education spokesman Michael Gove"</I>

You really think so?

By making out that 3.75 - 1.4 = ? is a "really hard" question, to which he doesn't know the answer?

It's bad enough that anyone could think that question was appropriate to a GCSE exam rather than a primary school arithmetic test, but that the cabinet minister in charge of education should be incapable of performing a simple subtraction is truly frightening.
