Local elections – overnight open thread

Most local election results won’t be declared until well into Friday, but a handful of councils are counting overnight – so please use this thread to update Lib Dem Voice readers with what’s happening near you, or links to emerging stories elsewhere.

Update 3: Looks like solid results Eastleigh (no scope for gains given how many seats we already hold!). Bristol looking good with several gains.

Update 2: News of gains against the Conservatives in Eastbourne and Norfolk.

Update: News from Bristol sounds very positive for the Lib Dems and absolutely disastrous for Labour, with Tories making little progress.

    Central Bedfordshire gone to Tories – BBC

    Con = 54
    LD = 11
    Ind = 1

    The Guardian’s called the same results. And yes, you did read that correctly, Central Bedfordshire (new council) didn’t vote in a single Labour councillor!

    Not. A. Single. One.

    This going to be a black day for Labour.

    Hampshire so far – Lab has lost 2 seats to the Tories. (one in Gosport, one in Havant) Labour holds 2 seats yet to declare. They should lose 1 of them. A saving in Council tax on the Group leader and deputy group leader allowances !

    Labour plunged from 47% to 32% in the Gosport seat and from 33% to 14% in Havant(a two seats ward) in real votes their top candidate went from 4467 in 2005 to 1106 this morning.

    Lib Dems have lost one in the new forest (south waterside by 6.6%) and Alton Town (by 84 votes) Lib Dems have also won a seat from the Cons in East Hants (Catherington) to balance the loss in Alton.

  • Posted 5th June 2009 at 7:40 am | Permalink

    Just a quick Essex update – 35 seats counted overnight, where we got the two gains in Brentwood mentioned above. Yes, we gained two seats in Eric Pickles’ constituency!

    Elsewhere, we held all five of our seats in Chelmsford, and Labour have lost all the seats they were defending so far (3 in Harlow, 2 in Braintree). At present, we’re on course to be the opposition in Essex. There are potential gains today in Colchester, Tendring, Uttlesford and Epping Forest.
