New poll: the alternative leadership contest

Written by Stephen Tall on 23rd October 2007 – 10:55 am

Barring something remarkable taking place between now and close of nominations, the coming leadership campaign will be a two-horse race between Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne.

A number of potential candidates have ruled themselves out of the race despite messages of support from many party members. So the new poll question is simple:

“Of those MPs who’ve ruled themselves out of standing, who would you have voted for given the chance?”

- Vince Cable
- Ed Davey
- Lynne Featherstone
- Julia Goldsworthy
- John Hemming
- Simon Hughes
- Charles Kennedy
- Susan Kramer
- David Laws
- Steve Webb

Feel free to mount a write-in campaign for any MPs you feel have been unjustly ignored.

Here’s the results of the previous poll, which asked: “Who do you think gave Ming Campbell the final push?”

1. The media: 35% (126)
2. The ‘young turks’: 23% (82)
3. Ming himself: 23% (81)
4. The polls: 13% (45)
5. Brown and Cameron: 4% (15)
6. The bloggers: 3% (9)

(Total Votes : 358)

Steve Webb has the right combination of interlect and decency to do the job.
I think he would be a popular choice with the public at large.
It is rumoured that he is on the left of the party, but he denies it.
However I suspect his political instincts are generally sound.

  2. Geoffrey Payne Says:

Oh and I forgot to add, none of the others. Although I wish someone could persuade Evan Harris to be ambitious.

  3. Jeremy Sanders Says:

Evan Harris. Good politically, and comes across extremely well to the public. Sadly, I can only assume he made it clear that he wasn’t interested, as no-one seemed to even mention him as a possibility.

  4. jockox3 Says:

John Thurso - I’m sure his politics are great, but that ‘tache and hairdo are head and shoulders above anyone else in British politics. Imagine the recognition we’d get!

  5. Sam Says:

Evan has many talents but he’s not enough of a team player or disciplined enough to be party leader.

  6. jockox3 Says:

Ah, is that what his girls are called! Besides, can you imagine him being on time for PMQs? It’s only half an hour long after all!

But this is an interesting discussion - maybe with just two on the ballot paper we should have a write in option, or at least RON…:-)

  7. Barry Scott Says:

John Thurso - pretty well for the reasons Jock outlined.

  8. crewegwyn Says:

But hasn’t John Thurso now moved on to “a full set” - beard and ‘tache?

Looks more like a Romanov Tsar than an MP!

  9. Geoffrey Payne Says:

Jeremy @ 3. If you want to be leader of the party, you have to do lots of fringe meetings at conference, and they have to be on big topics, like “Reinventing the State”.
You have to write chapters in books, opinion pieces in newspapers.
You have to get yourself invited to Lib Dem events (like the Hackney LDs Summer garden party for example, which I may have something to do with, our guest was a certain Chris Huhne last time - very impressive).
Evan hasn’t done that so he is not interested. Unless someone puts a rocket up his backside (metaphorically speaking), then he is out of the running.

  10. Tim Says:

Can we have a “non of the above”?
