Lib Dem gain in Taverham North, Broadland DC

Nich Starling and Taverham North winning team
Congratulations to Councillor Nich Starling (aka Norfolk Blogger) who gained a seat yesterday from the Tories on Broadland District Council.

The result, courtesy of ALDC:

LD Nich Starling 630 (54.5; +24.3)
Con 471 (40.8; -3.0)
Green 54 (4.7; +4.7)
[Other (0.0; -26.0)]
Majority 159
Turnout 31%
LD gain from Con
Percentage change is since May 2007.

This is a big swing from the Conservatives, (who have previously taken voters for granted here) in a ward from Chloe Smith MP’s Norwich North constituency.

Taverham North had the lowest turnout of any ward in last year’s Norwich North by-election, and will shortly form part of the new Broadland Constituency. This is the third by-election gain in Broadland constituency in the last five months, and bodes well for local Liberal Democrats in the coming General Election.

Well done Nich, I’m sure you’ll be great – but don’t you Lib Dems make an habit of this :-)

Taverham North didn’t have the lowest turnout at last years Norwich North by-election. That honour goes to Mile Cross.

Broadland has managed four by-election wins in little over a year they gained Buxton on the eve of Spring Conference 2009.

Well done Nich – quick question though – who was the ‘Other’ that stood previously but didn’t this time – a cursery glance appears to suggest that was where your additional votes came from?
