In politics you have to take responsibility for when you are being misunderstood, at least when it applies to a significant number of people on your own side. The blogs give you that feedback that you would not otherwise get.

Doesn't it depend on what you think is the purpose of the leader of a political party? Is Ming's time best spent explaining himself to the party who voted for him (he did have a clear majority afterall) or trying to represent our principles and ideas to the people we want to vote for us?
I'm not saying I think that greater interactive engagement with party members is a waste of his time, clearly not, but that maybe good leaders have to see a bigger picture and not get caught up in internal factionalism. As you say Paul, you're probably going to write your hypothetical rant anyway, so I wonder, would his attempts to connect with his detractors actually succeed in furthering debate about our direction and aims as a force for political good?

Jesus, what the hell is this thing about wanting my babies? It sounds totally un-biblical to me.

Laurence - Yes, I do remember that VI epithet attached to you - although I never called you that. I want to have your babies - remember?

As for voting for Ming - I assume Ming voted for himself and I voted for him (Number three) but apart from that I have no idea.

Laurence—Preferential voting system, so if they voted, odds are they all voted for Ming. The real question is how many put them in 1st place.

(he was my 2nd choice, RON would've been 3rd)

Like the Live Chats ideas.

But I'm tempted to suggest that a "conference call podcast" would be a better and more distinctive option.

When I did a chatoom on election night, I used a Wordpress plugin called Wordspew Extended. When I need to I can turn it back on in 30 seconds on a page or in a post. www.libdemblogs.co.uk might be a suitable neutral venue - I'm not whether LDV is on Wordpress.

Hang on a minute. I'm just the village idiot, remember? I'm not even at conference, though I am rather sadly following it all on BBC Parliament. I don't really think I deserve an audience with Sir Ming, but if he really wants to see me, I'll certainly show up. By the way, did anyone in that room actually vote for Sir Ming (apart from your eight year old daughter by extension)?

A good start might be leaving the odd comment on Ming's "blog" - his website hardly gets any, and if people used it as a way of engaging in argument with him, he might start using it as a real blog, rather than a convenient content-management system for his press-releases.
