tC - fair point about Michael Martin, although I think it was actually Douglas Carswell who started the ball rolling but Clegg was certainly brave to break with convention regarding party leaders not saying anything about sitting speakers.

That LSE conference was also the first time I heard Nick Clegg speak "live", and I too was impressed. During the leadership election Chris Huhne seemed to be better at communicating, especially on TV and radio (Nick Clegg had a tendency to waffle then). Fortunately, Mr Clegg seems to be getting better at this as time goes on - and he's always been impressive when given time to speak or in question and answer sessions.

As a certain political party sang in 1997, "things can only get better" :)

Andrew - I understand that it would have come at a cost. My point is that if the parliamentary party was not willing to follow through on it (and we can debate the mertis and demerits of doing so) then the suggestion that the recess could be cancelled should never have been made in the first place.

Cancelling the summer recess would not have come without a cost - MPs don't really go on holiday, they just go and get on with other things they need to do. Yes, the LD MPs could have sat around in Westminster and twiddled their thumbs all summer, but then they would have been letting their other stuff go undone and not had anything to show for it - a grand but ultimately self-destructive gesture.
