Paddick launches online advertising campaign

A news story from the Liberal Democrats:

Liberal Democrat Mayor candidate Brian Paddick has launched an online advertising campaign targeted at voters in London to mark the fourth anniversary of Ken Livingstone’s statement about reducing crime by 50%.

Livingstone said he hoped the massive increase in his portion of council tax would result in crime being reduced by 50% but the British Crime Survey, the most reliable measure of crime trends, shows no reduction in crime at all over the past four years.

Brian Paddick said: “This isn’t a happy anniversary for Ken. Not only has he failed to cut crime by 50% whatever statistics you look at, but one of the issues of most concern to Londoners, knife crime, is worse now than it was four years ago.

“It’s time for action not words. It is time for change in London, and time to take the knives and guns off our streets. That’s why I’m standing to be the next Mayor of London.”

Brian Paddick has over 30 years experience of fighting crime across London with positive results. He has pledged to cut crime by 20%, as measured by the British Crime Survey, if elected as Mayor on 1st May, or he will not stand for re-election.

Brian Paddick added, “Crime is at the top of Londoners’ list of concerns. I have a record of delivering results fighting crime, Ken Livingstone has failed on crime and Boris Johnson is too busy in Oxfordshire to worry about London.”

I recall that some Tory claimed somewhere, that David Cameron’s Conservative Party is in essence “Liberal Democrats for adults”. I wonder how this is compatible with the choices for London Mayor candidates of the two parties.

How about slogans such as “Get serious, vote for Paddick.”

Misquoting your opponent is not a good way to start. Ken Livingstone did not “say he can’t do anything about gun and knife crime” (I note no citation is given). The murder rate has fallen during his Mayoralty.

Presumably this statement is intended to refer to his statement in the London Talking debate, which was “No mayor, no commissioner of police, can stop young people killing each other if they haven’t been given a moral code.” If you want to endorse that statement, then you have to accept all parts of it.

Interesting that Brian Paddick pledges to cut crime by 20% during his term. At present under Ken the crime rate is falling at 5-6% per year so that would make more than 20% over a four-year term even without any change in policy.

Concur with Duncan, having the code as a copy/paste textarea for the above banner available, probably on the help Brian win page, would be good.

Also a smaller one same size as the standard LD ones in the JS would be nice, will fit in my sidebar nicely.

Would it be possible to have this sort of thing not as an animated gif but as bit of Java/HTML that resizes with web page layout?

As well as, but not instead of, can’t use JS on all blogging platforms, and a chunk of browsers block it as well, so you’d want a NOSCRIPT gif version as well I’d have thought.
