Patsy Calton award: nominations close 11th June

In case you’ve missed the news about this award, here’s the advert that has appeared in Liberal Democrat News:

Sadly on 29th May 2005 Patsy Calton, MP for Cheadle, died. Patsy was a wife, a mother, a teacher, an activist, a Councillor, a Parliamentarian, and an inspiration to us all. Her energy, enthusiasm and achievements truly were phenomenal, and she undoubtedly would have wanted to see other female Liberal Democrats actively involved in the Party too.

Nominating a female local activist, Councillor or MP/AM/MSP/MEP for the Patsy Calton Award is a brilliant way for you to acknowledge the fantastic contribution that she has made to the Party, and the role that she has played in inspiring others.

The winner will be chosen by a panel from a shortlist and the award presented in Brighton at the Annual Party Conference in September 2007. There will also be an evening reception at Conference to celebrate all those short-listed.

Please send your nominations by Monday 11th June 2007 including the name and constituency of your nominee and a brief description of her achievements and activities in the party and why she deserves the Patsy Calton Award, to: WLD, 4 Cowley Street, London, SW1P 3NB, fax 020 7799 2170 or email [email protected]

  • What’s your point Laurence?

  • Laurence, of course Jenny should be nominated. I am really shocked at the smirking homophobia behind that question.

  • I’m sure Laurence didn’t mean anything by it. People are human. But some under-represented groups are easy targets for smirky, jokey comments, which do damage their credibility through no fault of their own.

Perhaps a cautionary tale about how those who’ve never experienced real discrimination or barriers should be a little more careful about overtly denying the experiences of others…..

See the GLA discussion and why we should do something now.
