what I find distasteful about this whole Hain saga is that he seems to blame it on the admin overhead of filling the correct forms in. Given the complexity of the forms that the DWP seems content to hand out, this strikes me as more than a little ironic.

[although, given the sheer length of time it has taken Hain to complete this paperwork, it would be easy to draw the conclusion that something fundamentally more fishy is going on which is proving hard to cover up before he can come up with a plausible set of excuses. And given that 15% of declared donations have to go to the Labour Party, hasn't he defrauded his party of a whole lot of moolah too?]

OK, I know it's trivial, but I was intrigued to read that Peter Hain blames his orange complexion on having been born in Nairobi. When I knew him, in the late sixties and early seventies, he was as white as I am. Perhaps he made a Faustian Pact: "All right Peter, you WILL achieve your ambition of sitting in a Labour Cabinet, but the price, as well as being your political soul, will be that you turn orange to remind everyone of your origins in the Liberal Party".

It was just the 3pm news bulletin. There's just been another mention of it on the 6 o'clock news. It wasn't a recording of Lembit speaking, it was reported speech

Having met Peter Hain when both he and I were YLs, it's sad to see the fall away from his youthful radicalism and idealism.
Ach, it's sad we're both that much older, I guess!!

Lembit has just been quoted on radio four in pretty much unequivocal support of Hain... This says to me that there's a skeleton in the lib dem closet just waiting to come out. But then, I /am/ very cynical.
