I agree with Martin Land - he is a skilled operator similar to Norman Baker who can see the tiny shaft of light of a `what's really happening there` idea and let the sunshine in. Whether or not he would be a great leader I'm not so sure. Often people perform brilliantly when the pressure's off and they're temporarily promoted. Whatever happens this performance should surely secure him a place as deputy leader? Well that’s the rules for you – only two questions allowed for the Lib Dems at PMQs.
