It is likely to cause her a problem if she is seen to be inconsistent by condemning one thing in public and condoning it in private as this undermines confidence in her. She is the Home Secretary for goodness sake and therefore is supposed to uphold the highest standards of law and equality before it. The expenses may have been an oversight, but confidence in her judgement cannot withstand accusations of neglect.
