Good for Brown. Though I’m not sure about the absence of winter. In reality, ‘Christ’-mas was really piggy-backed onto existing winter solstice celebrations. The Romans celebrated the solstice on 25 Dec. Then the Emperor Constantine converted…

Dozens of cultures across the world have festivities around this time of year – e.g. Dong Zhi in China. It seems pretty obvious to me that the root of this coincidence is the fact that the days start to get longer again. To the ancients – in the northern hemisphere at least – it must have been a quite a relief every year, and worth celebrating! Still is, in my view – and a good excuse to open your pressies on 21 Dec (at exactly 17.47 this year…!)

Mind you, that’s not any spring/summer view, it’s a view of Chartwell in Kent, which Churchill regarded as one of the most beautiful views in the world. His admiration of the view from Chartwell is often regarded as being one of his major sources of inspiration in his public life, and, particularly, during the war. In essence, he was damned if Hitler was going to get his hands on such a beautiful view!

Good spot. The endless bollox about “Council X bans Christmas!” is so totally tired. Tabloids have lied so long and hard on this subject that they are beyond sanity on it.
