"The councillors’ role was essentially one of rubber-stamping."

Oh, I see. In a member-led administration (eg, Manchester) members never talk to officers and officers never talk to members.

Pull the other one. It has knobs on.

And by the way. If all Manchester City Council's ruling Labour administration ever does is rubber-stamp decisions made by officers it knows absolutely nothing about, then I'd say it's high time to throw them out of office.

Tony Travers - a colleague of mine - has no party affiliation. He has, however, been consistently committed to clean politics.

<a href="http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/129/129202_labour_facing_quiz_over_5000_donation.html" rel="nofollow">ManchesterEveningNews.co.uk</a>

It makes me laugh how often this story has been re-heated. Surely I'm due an OBE - or better - for services to recycling.

There was a Standards Board investigation; two councillors were cleared. I looked into it for some time, but there never was any evidence the politicians had anything to do with the assessment of bids, which was carried out by officers and scrutinised by consultants. The councillors' role was essentially one of rubber-stamping.

Oh. I should have said "benefited directly" rather than "benefited personally". They still do benefit personally but indirectly.

The difference between this and the Poulson scandal is that in the latter case politicians benefited personally, in the former case it is a political party that is enriched.

Having said that, it remains to be seen how many Labour politicians end up sitting on boards of or acting as consultants for companies they once favoured as holders of public office.

By the way, I still can't get over Anthony Crosland's excuse for accepting a dinner service from John Poulson: "I never used the bloody thing."

Just out of interest ... why would it matter if he did?

Does what he is quoted as saying seem in any way partisan?

On the face of it a number of Labour Councillors must be in breach of the Code of Conduct by failing to declare a prejudicial interest.

Complaint to the Standards Board is much over-used but probably proper in this case.
