Power2010 turns its sights on the Lords

We’ve covered before how Power2010 is pushing for a set of political reforms and targeting specific MPs who have abused the system. Now it’s the House of Lords that is getting its specific attention, with a petition for a fully elected upper house.

Power2010 ups its local campaigning

When I covered the results of the Power2010 consultation on what political reforms it should promote, there was a brief discussion on this site and elsewhere about whether Power2010 would have the campaigning muscle to really make an impact.

Today brings news of how Power2010 is trying to ensure that. Their news release says:

MPs were put on notice today as democracy group Power2010 announced its plans to target those MPs who have consistently opposed cleaning up and reforming our political system.

And the winners in the Power 2010 poll on political reform are…

The polls have closed and over 100,000 votes been counted in the Power 2010  online consultation on political reform (which we’ve previously covered here).

The most popular proposals, with people able to pick more than one from a list, were a proportional voting system, the end of ID cards and government data hoarding, an elected House of Lords, English votes on English laws and a commitment to drawing up a written constitution.

The next stage in Power 2010′s campaign will involve candidates being challenged to back this set of proposals. The campaign’s director, Pam Giddy, says, “The vote shows that voters can make difficult choices …

If all it took to sort out our political system was to produce a list of proposals we’d have the best political system, ever.

Over the last few years, there has been no shortage of wish lists, most of which have promptly disappeared never to be thought of again.

There's a plane in the Hudson. I'm on the ferry going to pick... on TwitpicA year ago today US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing into New York’s Hudson River. Eyewitness Janis Krums took this famous photo of the plane (right) and immediately shared it with the internet via Twitter, thus proving the website could be used for so much more than telling the world what you had for breakfast. (The only twitpic photo that’s come close since then was of a fox on the London Underground, but I live in hope and carry a camera…)

And as Mark reminds us, today’s a very good day for having your say on MPs’ expenses.
