I wonder if the Independent in 2nd in Torfaen is blaming the Tory candidate standing for his/her defeat?

  • The independent vote was split between five candidates.

Torfaen is a solid Labour constituency: a valley of towns that exist because of coal mines and tin works, long since defunct and not replaced with very much.
It took years of the last UK Labour government (and some unpopular council decisions) to turn voters to independents in recent years.

Labour had to work VERY hard to lose seats in Torfaen.

The seat became empty when an independent councillor resigned, having been found guilty of breaching the code of conduct on 10 occasions and suspended by an Adjudications Panel for Wales tribunal (quick check: that was January).

A Tory in Pontypool? Snowballs in hell have it easy by comparison.

Still, we always enjoy Labour supporters coming on here to mock.
It so makes me want to switch my allegiances.

If I had wanted to mock I would have mentioned the Bellingham result or at least linked to the LibDem who only last week said they had a real chance!

  • I thought toryboysnevergrowup’s comment was very witty. Tories doing miserably at by-elections is hugely enjoyable in my book. He also kindly didn’t draw attention to the fact that we didn’t even have a candidate.

  • >If I had wanted to mock …

Sorry. But given that Labour supporters fill thread after thread on here with ‘you’re rubbish, you’re doomed,’ I’m afraid I’ve kind of come to assume that’s all they ever have to say.

    >Tories doing miserably at by-elections is hugely enjoyable in my book.

They don’t float my boat either. But fair play to them, for a Tory in Pontypool to get 18 votes is quite an achievement: – it was an increase on last time ;-)

It was actually the arrogance, the ‘we know best’ and downright rudeness of certain Welsh Labour councillors over various issues that ensured my support for the Lib Dems in the first place.
    I don’t like bullies. Or foul-mouthed tirades.
Kind of killed my sense of humour where Welsh councils are concerned.
