Mark, absolutely, it benefits newbies extensively (myself included, when I was one), and that is a good thing, but I think my problem with it is that with a cursory glance it makes it look like we think that the top seven are the ones that are the best posts, and it ain't necessarily so.

And yet I resist advocating inverting it so that Stephen's selections are the top ones because mostly it is just one man's view...

Bleh. Not being much help, am I?

Having partly come up with the idea of the round-up originally you can blame me :-)

I agree that click throughs are an imperfect measure; think how rarely Nich Starling, James Graham, Peter Black or Lynne Featherstone feature in the most clicked category despite their (relatively) very high traffic levels.

The advantage of the clicks stats are that they are easily available, and the drawbacks are one reason for having the other part of the dozen too.

As Jennie points out, the system does particularly benefit people who have smaller regular readerships of their site. But overall I'd rather have something that brings disproportionate attention to those who have small audiences than a system that disproportionately benefits those with big audiences, as this way new or niche bloggers get more of a chance to get wider attention and so build up their own audience.

Joe: I like that click throughs are used for some of them, because that is a way for new people to be noticed and to be told that they are being noticed. But maybe it should be rejigged a bit.

Certainly the click through ones should not necessarily be counted as the best ones, though. I mean, quite often I'll click through to something with an attractive headline on Lib Dem blogs and then think that it's a big pile of rubbish...

I agree with Jennie that click-through is a crude measure. It doesn't even count those (like me) who read lib dem blogs in a feed reader.

I suggest you award points for items people include in their shared links.

(those that are lib dem, anyway)

Odd that the only one of the "most clicked" ones I have read is #4; yet I have read all the editor's choice ones. It occurs to me, though, that most people, on finding a blog they like, add it to their blogroll, f-list, etc. and won't be clicking through from LDV? Thus if a blog is really popular, it's LESS likely to be clicked through from here?

Just a thought. I think that explains the continual reappearance of certain people in th GD: there are those I don't want to read every post by for various reasons, but might click through to if it looks like they've said something interesting...
