Update from Glasgow East

Written by Andrew Reeves on 14th July 2008 – 11:18 pm

The poll from The Daily Telegraph shows Labour holding the seat with the Liberal Democrats in third place, but importantly ahead of the Tories.

This has been an interesting campaign and one where there has been such immense media interest.

There are four TV appearances for our candidate Ian Robertson, with the first having taken place as you can see here. The Scotsman rated Ian as coming out best in the debate, giving him 9/10:

Emerged as the surprise star of the show. He was effective, forthright and intervened sharply across his opponents.

Our sincere thanks go to all of the volunteers who came to help this weekend, we had a good turnout and we would like as many to come up this weekend for the final week. Details of how to help here.

You are guaranteed a warm welcome.

The Scotsman also said that he was “a no-hoper” in the byelection, which I notice you omitted to quote.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone if Labour win, but it also shouldn’t matter to anyone. Presumably in a landslide they would still win seats like Glasgow East, all three seats in Stoke… etc. It won’t save them :)

I am interested in all this SNP support, whether they actually agree with nationalism or whether they’re just expressing their rage at Labour without wanting to vote for Camoron.

Why is that important? I’m sure who came third and fourth will barely register in the media coverage. The story will be whether Labour retained the seat and how big the swing to the SNP was.

  • Simon Says:

Obviously a very impressive candidate for us.

  • Toby Philpott Says:

It does matter whether or not we beat the Tories as Cameron’s narrative has been about how nowhere is now a no go area for Tories. If we finish fourth then he’ll be able to drone on for hours about Tory recovery.

  • Oranjepan Says:

The failure of the tories to get into third place suggests several points, firstly that the tories are unlikely to make a breakthrough in Scotland (which is significant for the GE)

Secondly that any efforts made by David Cameron to show the relevance of his and IDS’ ‘broken society’ narrative is dismissed by the people to whom he is supposed to be addressing with his sermonising and therefore cannot be taken completely seriously.

And last but not least, that we can claim a minor victory in that we confounded expectation that we were expected to be trail off as the major losers. That we have substantial candidates with a real voice that cuts through the noise and ballyhoo of a campaign which ought to go against us should return a little confidence to the troops north of the border after a difficult period of readjustment.

You’re not convincing me that anyone but the most dedicated political anoraks will even notice.

  • Steve Says:

Just to repeat what Anonymous said… why is it “important” that the LD candidate finishes ahead of the Tories? I’m a Tory (don’t worry, I wiped my feet on the way in) and even I will admit that there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of Glasgow East turning blue (football/sectarian double meaning’s aside).

Equally, if the Tory candidate did finish ahead of the LibDem candidate, it would still be a non-story, with the vast majority of press going covering the swing in the first two places.

What is going on in Glasgow Labour?

I’ve only just seen this opinion poll in Glasgow East, for the Scottish Daily Mail:

    Labour 52%
    SNP 35%
    Conservative 7%
    Lib Dem 3%

It might be advisable not to make too much of an issue of who comes third!
