PHI100, Politics Home’s politically-balanced panel of experts and insiders, have once again rated Vince Cable MP as their top politician:
Vince Cable maintains his position at the head of our top politicians league table and hits a new high with the experts and insiders.
The panel clearly think that the Lib Dem’s deputy leader and treasury spokesman is continuing to strike the right note in the wake of the crisis budget.
They give him a rating of 8.3, up from 7.8 last month and cementing his position at the top of the table.
We regularly ask the PHI100 to rate the effectiveness of leading politicians where a 1 is totally useless and a 10 is totally effective. The party leaders, whom we rate separately, are not included.

It is well deserved.
I have to admit I would like to interview him on his opinions myself. At a fringe meeting at conference I asked him whether he thought the marketisation of public services was a good idea at a time the private sector was in such turmoil. He replied clearly not when you consider the costs of regulation at a time when banks cannot even trust each other.
What I would like to know from Vince is where this leaves “economic liberalism”, something we did not support when I joined the party in 1983 and only became fashionable in recent time when the economy boomed in what we now know was a bubble caused by easy credit from an overinflated housing market.
So I wonder if Vince accepts that we need a change of direction rather than more of the same?
