Your picture next to your comments?
Written by Ryan Cullen on 8th January 2008 – 11:16 amYou may have noticed that next to people’s comments is a small picture of themselves.
If you want a picture to appear next to your comments you need to do two things.
- Visit Gravatar.com, create an account and upload a picture.
- Post a comment, ensuring that your email address that you’ve used on Gravatar is the same one that you’ve put in the comment field.
Feel free to post test comments below.

Bloody thing…

I tried to do this but found it almost impossible. I’m still not sure how the picture I have has appeared next to my comments. Still, my son is rather chuffed about it!

Jennie you need to make sure that it’s rated at either G or PG (hover over the image and then click on the small letter to the right).
Also once upload you will need to activate the image against your email, to do this, click the image at the bottom and press confirm.

I’ve activated the image against my email… I guess the gravatar logo means that it’s a ratings issue. Oh well.
8th January 2008 at 11:02 pm
Hang on… I get the image in my preview, but not next to my posts…?

Of course, if you want to be really cunning…

You can setup different email addresses with different images (I did this as a test but it’s cool). Or Gmail users can use the + trick and Gravatar’ll still run it. The above is my matbowles[at]gmail.com pic. This is my matbowles+bomb[at]gmail.com pic.
Very silly, but it means you can mess around or add emphasis depending on mood.

Just got to see if it works for me too.

* pokes the bloody tech support to stop showing off with HIS avatars and sort hers out, the git *

This is a test comment made by friendly neighbourhood tech support.
Let’s hope this works…

Gravatar sucks

Well… it’s not a rating issue for me… my image is rated G, i.e. suitable for all.

MartinSGill, as you don’t have the Blue G, I’m guessing that the email addresses aren’t matching. Make sure that everything is in lowercase.
9th January 2008 at 11:51 am
Yep, it’s all in lowercase, and if I go to the gravatar site directly with my md5hash I get the image:

Maybe it takes a few minutes to work.
12th January 2008 at 11:45 pm
We’ll see if this works.
12th January 2008 at 11:47 pm
Nope. The right email address might help.

A completely useless piece of technology!
13th January 2008 at 3:18 pm
We’ll see if a Broadband connection does the trick…
13th January 2008 at 3:19 pm
So there we have it. The technology actually is useless.
13th January 2008 at 3:22 pm
Working for me fine Angus, both of my pics display succesfully all over the Web. Yours, OTOH, don’t.
I do wonder what you’re doing wrong? Try setting up a new Gravatar for a different email address, but this time copy/paste the address you have in the auto-insert field for this site?
13th January 2008 at 3:38 pm
I’ll try lower case this time.
13th January 2008 at 4:16 pm

Right, well I’ve signed up. Some xxxxer had chosen the name asquith, so I registered as ElvisCostello (my username on Comment Is Free, in case you couldn’t tell from the fact that the writing style is exactly the same.
Not the most flattering picture of all time. But then, I had been drinking heavily when it was taken.
That is if it works!
