On Monday Lib Dem Voice brought you the story of potty-mouthed Conservative candidate Chris Hawes and his foul language aimed at Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg.
Yesterday Chris Hawes decided to step down as the Conservative’s council candidate for the Leavesden ward of Three Rivers District Council, which in the Lib Dem target constituency of Watford. Watford Conservatives’ representaive Peter Ganney emailed the Watford Lib Dems constituency chair, saying: “Chris is embarrassed by what he wrote and has apologised for using such rude words. He has chosen to withdraw his candidature for Three Rivers District Council, Leavesden Ward”.
Chris Hawes was not just a council candidate, but is also an aide to Conservative parliamentary candidate Richard Harrington and a local Scoutmaster.

All credit to him for doing that, particularly as I’m not sure it was sufficiently heinous a mistake to warrant such a drastic response.
I’m not going to credit him at all; I know I’ve insulted people in the news on my blog over the years, and my archive goes back to 2004. I’ve contributed articles to Devil’s Kitchen on occasions as well.
I’m not going to stand down as a council candidate for insulting expressing a strong opinion online, and I’m not going to let any of my candidates do so either (Jennie swears more than I do, and is standing in a more winnable ward).
This whole thing is old media hype, that a bunch of bloggers think it’s worth hounding candidates into standing down is depressing.
A scalp for Lib Dem Voice! An evul swearer has been taken down!
*So* fucking glad I’m not on the contributors page any more.
I hope no-one goes through your web-print with a similarly fine-tooth comb, Ryan. No, really… I don’t! Okay, I do.
Should Mr Eugenides be scared or should he be kakking himself?
