LDV is 10 years old today!

At this moment, exactly 10 years ago, LDV was born. (Simon) Hughes, the headline said, was certain to be challenged for the party presidency. As it happened, he wasn’t, but wonky crystal ball or not, it was the start of a journey which, to date, has seen 24,290 posts and 340,000 comments published.

We’ve had 22 members of the editorial team over the years, keeping the site going 365 days a year. They work incredibly hard and I’m very grateful for the diverse and varied content and views that they bring to the site.

Ryan, our technical guru, deserves a particular mention. I still haven’t forgiven myself for that time when I emailed him to tell him the site was down. He sent me some instructions to sort it and I later realised that he had been at the maternity hospital with his wife for the birth of his second child.

Starting a site at this time of year, like getting married (as I did 28 years ago yesterday) means that we always get a bank holiday to celebrate our birthday. So, enjoy the weekend and raise a glass to us in the bank holiday sunshine.

Simon , you are right to say thanks to Caron and the team for keeping it going , wrong to think it a thankless task .

I have many times praised the team and site , whether in direct comments to the editors or contributors to its running well, or about it as a site , to other friends and colleagues in our party .

It is the best site of its kind in Britain , bar none in my view , but it is only as good as the input. One of the reasons I am defensive about LDV , is I feel strongly about it ,and my and all our contributors involvement in it .

The internet is an Ok Corrral , not always ok at all , but a wild west for sure ! Gun slinging is par for the course, the thing is to go prepared to dodge a bullet, never start an actual fight , and be prepared to walk away and into the sunset . The pioneer spirit is needed and as long as you believe in it and what you stand for it is worth the journeys we make . It is too male dominated , but there is room a plenty for many a Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley as any Wild Bill Hickock !

Happy 10th birthday LDV! Possible the best website in the UK for discussing liberal politics.

Thanks to the editors and those who politely engage.

    Caron,
    Many happy returns!
Congratulations to you and all the team for the skill and effort you show in keeping this always so entertaining and informative. You must have the patience of Job and the judgement of Solomon.
    Well done.

  • Happy birthday to the good ship Lib Dem Voice and all who sail in her.

Thanks to all the team and regular commentators – may many more years lie ahead,

    Happy Birthday LDV! Double figures!
Thank you for all your hard work everyone. I’m disabled both physically and mentally by M.E. so it’s absolutely fantastic to be able to keep in touch with other members of the party through LDV. My life would be so depressing without the opportunity to hear the comments and ideas of other Lib Dems and those who aren’t members but are politically aware. Many many thanks and good wishes to you all.
