During the passage of the Hunting Bill in the Lords (where of course it did not pass and had to await the Commons invoking the Parliament Act) I overheard one of the doorkeepers telling someone that a fox had been apprehended in the Library Corridor in the early hours of the previous night. I butted in and joked that we ought to call in the nearest Hunt in all their hunting gear to deal with the problem. The doorkeeper looked at me with a severe expression and said: “Oh no, My Lord, that would not be appropriate. The security staff dealt with the matter.” I still don’t know if it was a deadpan joke or a seriously shocked comment.
