Clegg on immigration: Labour has failed

The Government’s revelation that 2.5 million foreigners have moved to the UK in the past five years has drawn this response from Lib Dem shadow home secretary Nick Clegg:

“Whilst these figures do not show how many of these workers have already returned home, they certainly confirm that the numbers are considerably higher than the Government first estimated.

“A liberal open immigration policy only makes sense if you also plan for its consequences. It is clear that the Government has failed to plan adequately both in terms of housing and funding for local services.

“It should be remembered, however, that people are only coming to Britain because they are successfully providing services and doing jobs available in the British economy to the benefit of British consumers.”

Personally, I’d prefer Nick had made his final point first. Still, this is a welcome re-affirmation of the Lib Dems’ properly liberal approach to the issues of both asylum and immigration. Labour talks tough, but makes a mess of the whole system; while the Tory party is still unsure whether to follow its instincts or its leader.

  • I am disabled yes really disabled, I have been told too get a job, four years of looking and fighting against people from Poland, I’ve been told to look at Voluntary work which i did and was shocked to find paid jobs on the Job centers computers being offered to the disabled for no wages.

I have been to a number of interviews for jobs I could do and each one has gone to a person from Poland.

Now I want to work have done course have paid for these course had saved up and guess what job I was offered, handing out baskets at Asda for six weeks.

I am sorry but I am on the verge of joining the BNP, I am so dammed annoyed people can look at me born here lived here all my life disabled due to an accident at work and live in bloody poverty while all you lot Labour Tories and the Lib Dem’s tell me Immigration is great.

  • Robert – like you, I am “between jobs” and finding it tough going. However, if you are not prepared to take up paid casual work (which you could presumably manage) because you find it too demeaning, then it really is your problem and nothing to do with Polish migrants who, fortunately for the UK economy, are prepared to take such jobs and pay their share of taxes to provide us both with a subsistence income. Good luck anyway.
