Julie Pörksen will be the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Berwick constituency at the 2015 general election.
An agricultural economist, Julie grew up in Belsay, Northumberland. She was selected yesterday evening. Julie stood as a candidate in the Northumberland County Council elections last May, slashing the Tory majority in Amble West with Warkworth to one vote.
Sir Alan Beith is standing down at the next election after 40 years as Berwick’s MP.
Sir Alan said:
I am delighted that local campaigner Julie Pörksen has been chosen. She has the qualities and commitment to be a real fighter for the people of Northumberland.

Congratulations to Julie I’m sure she will work tirelessly to make sure that @Dave’s grim prediction does not come true.
Good luck, Julie. I look forward to hearing you speak in the Commons in May 2015.
Having once lived in Warkworth for a short while and been agent for a Northumberland County Council by-election in Amble which we won during the dark days of the Lib-Lab pact, I wish her well.
See the Conservatives won the Tweedale by election yesterday? Looks as if our Border seat is going as well in 2015, oh happy days!!!! Does not look good for Berwick.
The Party has found it a challenge to defend seats when a long time serving MP stands down. However, Julie Pörksen is a strong local choice.
Really great news to see a female candidate for a held seat. Of course it will be a tough fight but it can be won.
Don’t write Julie off. She is a tenacious campaigner and has over 18 months to work to hold the seat.
What happens in STV/AV elections in Scotland has nothing to do with what will happen in Berwick.

As one time campaign manager in our successful by-election win off Labour in Lynmouth-Ellington, I too wish Julie all the best.
