Lib Dem Jobwatch special: Fancy trying to keep Tim Farron under control?

Every  leader does need someone they trust who can look into their eyes and tell them not to be an idiot. Or encourage them to do something that they are nervous about. Or boost their confidence when it wanes. Ben Rich has been doing that job for Tim Farron since he became leader in July, but it was only ever going to be a temporary role.

Tim is now advertising for a permanent  chief of staff. The official advert says:

The Chief of Staff will be able to provide high quality, insightful, senior counsel and strategic advice to the leader and work hand-in-hand with him to develop his vision and priorities.

A fuller job description gives the qualities considered essential for applicants:

  • Proven management and financial skills
  •  Excellent political antennae and judgment
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
  • A track record of commitment to liberal politics and a first rate understandingof the Liberal Democrats, including evidence of sympathy with its aims andvalues
  • A strong personality, the confidence to take the initiative and make quick judgments
  • The ability to juggle a demanding workload
  • An understanding of the media and the ability to remain calm and in control when handling difficult and complex issues on the leader’s behalf
  • A track record of working at a senior level interacting with senior figures from politics, business and elsewhere
  • A team player, happy to remain in the background and enjoy the success of those for and with whom they work

Applications must be received by 9 am on 9th October with interviews taking place on 14th.

The advert says it’s a 40 hour working week, which amused us. In reality it’ll be much more than that.

Just as a wee bit of fun, what West Wing character do you think would be best placed to advise Tim? Does he need a CJ, or a Josh or a Leo or a Kate Harper – or even an Amy Gardner.
