Interesting articles as always. I was stuck however by the Snakes and Ladders article about whether the benefits system is too complex to ‘encourage’ people back into work. I always thought we ‘encouraged’ people to do something when we wanted them to do something but knew we couldn’t force them to do it. I’m not sure that is the message we should be promoting regarding the benefits system…we want a benefits system to kick in when people are unable to work due to ill-health or are able to work but no work is available for them to take. It should not be the case of ‘encouraging’ people to work and their benefits continuing as before if they choose not to work when work is available.
