Oldham hustings quiz

A bit of Sunday morning fun. Here are some quotes from a hustings in Oldham West and Royton. See if you can match them up to the candidates taking part who are:

John Bickley (UKIP)

Jane Brophy (Liberal Democrats)

James Daley (Conservative)

Simeon Hart (Green)

Jim McMahon (Labour)

Such a pity that Lord Oink-a-lot, the Monster Raving Loony Party couldn’t make it. He evokes memories of that delicious night in the Liberal Democrat Conference bar when that story about David Cameron rippled its way round. Groups of people convulsed with laughter as the news made its merry way round.

But back to serious business. Here are the series of quotes. Your job is to match them up with the candidates. Which one would you want as your MP based just on the following?

Quote 1

Get a job at Oldham Council. People there seem to do very nicely. Jim McMahon earns £80,000 in allowances. The chief executive earns £160,000 a year

Quote 2

On December 4 you will trot back off to Cheshire. My interest is in this town and the issues in Oldham. If you want to keep making your petty points then continue to do so.

Quote 3

We are the party of education. We believe everyone should get the same chances. No matter what background you are from and we very much believe in funding apprenticeships.

Quote 4

If I am elected I will be knocking on the door of the education secretary to make sure this town has the funding it needs to support its young people.

Quote 5

The Iraq war is an example of not having a clear idea of what you are there to do — we need to make sure that we don’t repeat that.

Quote 6

Clearly ISIS is a major threat to us — but we need to know that we have learnt the lessons from Iraq, we need an end game plan

Quote 7

We are an evidence based party. For us it would have to be an international approach. We need to make sure we do more on prevention and cutting off funds to the organisations.

Quote 8

It’s not right that civilians are caught up. We cannot make a quick decision, it is not an easy one to make

Quote 9

Jeremy Corbyn does not think Osama Bin Laden should have been killed. They would not shoot to kill terrorists. They want to disband MI5. Labour is a clear and present danger.

Quote 10

I’m passionate about the environment. I know the area, I have worked here for the health service. I’m passionate about mental health service for young people. We are the only party that actually completely stands against tax credit cuts. Labour only voted to delay them.

If you want to help with Jane’s campaign, all the information you need is here.

  • Could you put the answers in the comments please? 🙂 I think 4,5,6,7,10 were Jane. At a guess 1 is green, 2 is Labour, 9 is Tory, 3 is Tory and 8 is green. Or is that wishful thinking?

I will in a while, but I wanted to give you the chance to have a go.

You are not right, by the way:-).

  • paul barker 29th Nov '15 - 4:30pm

I would have said 1 & 9 were UKIP; 2 probably Labour & the rest Jane.

  • paul barker 29th Nov '15 - 8:52pm

PS Does anyone whos been in Oldham have any sense of the result ? Does UKIP have a real chance ?

  • Jayne Mansfield 29th Nov '15 - 9:35pm

    @ Paul barker,
Nigel Farage is asking Tory voters to lend him their vote. I dare say UKIP will exploit the deal that the EU has just done with Turkey, and that this may have an effect on the voting behaviour of some who were considering voting Tory.

  • In Heywood and Middleton, UKIP were fifth, behind even the BNP, but got to within 2.2% of a breakthrough. In Oldham West they are a clear second, but even if they sweep up all the rest of the non-Labour votes (they swept up ours in 2015), they will need a good number of Labour voters or a massive differential turnout. The Jeremy Corbyn factor may lose some Labour votes, but apathy is their real enemy.

My vibes tell me UKIP are in with an outside chance, but without a big event like another terrorist atrocity, I don’t think they can quite get enough, just as we never could in such by-elections when we were the third force. The important questions for us are:-

Can we hold our deposit? Probably not, but it would be a good sign if we could.
Can we beat the Greens? Probably, but that’s down to their weakness not our strength.
Can we beat the Loonies? Almost certainly, but if we can’t it’s close to pack up and go home time, like the continuing SDP did after Bootle.

1 could well be UKIP. I’m guessing 9 is Tory (wouldn’t make sense for UKIP to single out Labour in that way in a working-class constituency). 7 sounds like us. 3 or 4 could be us but actually 4 could be anyone. I think 2 is probably Labour. 8 might be Green. 10 could be us or Green or even UKIP.

Jane was just asked on Daily Politics whether she indulged in traditional Oldham fish and chips. She dodged the question but pointed out that a portion of mushy peas count as one of your “five-a-day”. Very deft!
