The tale of Danny Alexander and the Big Raspberry*

So, Danny Alexander has been having lunch with some journalists today. The conversation, according to Kevin Maguire, was mature and relevant, discussing the important issues of the day.

You would have to be really sad to type “Danny Alexander fart” into Google, wouldn’t you?

Chris Hope was referring to a story initially broken by Michael White of the Guardian the day after the AV referendum in 2011. “Not much tension but plenty hot air” was how he put it:

Yet it was his coalition colleague, Danny Alexander, who may well have spoken most eloquently for the mood of Britain. Waiting to be interviewed at Sky’s Millbank studios just after dawn he eased off the most enormous fart heard in those parts since the Blitz – unaware that he was being recorded on 100 monitor screens by startled Sky staff. It may prove to be the election’s Facebook moment.

Guido added a few days later that Sky staff had been threatened with sacking if the footage emerged. All we can say is that we’re grateful that it never did. After all, who really wants to see that?

But seriously, this has done nothing to dispel the notion of a clubbish Westminster mostly male elite.

*A Euphemism.

Perhaps a new euphemism will be “to do an Alexander”!

I look forward to the next political thriller, along the lines of the Orient Express, the Manchurian Candidate, the Bourne Ultimatum, … the Alexander Fart.

Then there’ll be the history books, explaining how this particular event propelled us into a new universe where … And perhaps someone will name a new village after the event, an advance on Ramsbottom!

Must get back to work now …. or I’ll get the Osborne Chop!

  • Thank you for a good laugh

My parents used to say wherever you be in church or chapel let it rattle.

  • Hahahaha… Danny Alexander can claim he is human for all our failings. Cant stop laughing…

  • that may just be as bad as revenge porn!!!

  • If it had been Miliband farting, I expect the LDV reaction would have been less sympathetic.

What is it with these constant attempts to build up Danny Alexander? Two threads in one day? Even for the greatest Danny fan that might seem a bit over the top.

  • I believe many in the country will now see him as more like one of them than Farage simply down the pub , lets face it absolutely everyone can relate!

John, this isn’t exactly a thread that Danny’ll be showing to his grandchildren, to be honest.

I think that he would prefer his grandchildren to see this rather than the “rabbit in the headlights” moment from May, which you were discussing with Gordon Seekings only yesterday.

  • This is the man who aided and abetted Osborne’s screwing of our poorest people as revealed by the recent report by Essex Uni et al. I couldn’t be less interested in his bodily behaviour. Given this report can someone tell me what the Lib Dems are for and why I should have spent 30 years in the Party?

  • “Given this report can someone tell me what the Lib Dems are for and why I should have spent 30 years in the Party?”

Because you are free to make your own choices maybe?

It’s not what you say but how you say it.

Seriously, someone farted 3 years ago and it warrants an article?

  • Yes; come to think of it….yes.
