A bumper Lib Dem Job Watch

If you want to work for the Liberal Democrats, there are plenty opportunities at the moment. Let’s start with opportunities outside the party which may interest Liberal Democrats, though. Are you a campaigner with a passion for Europe? Then Britain Stronger in Europe needs you. They have no fewer than 13 jobs going at the moment:

Field Operations Executive

This is a hands-on position with the Field Operations Executive providing support to staff and volunteer teams throughout the UK.

Essential Experience
• Supporting the delivery of plans designed to identify, recruit and activate volunteers in a campaigning environment, especially young people
• Supporting senior staff in the implementation of campaign activities across the UK

Desirable experience
• Experience of a variety of modern on-the-ground campaign techniques
• Experience of integrating online and offline volunteer and voter contact
• Managing relationships with external suppliers or agencies
• Working in a political or campaign environment and exercising political judgement
• Working in a fast-paced environment and to tight deadlines

Personal skills and attributes
• A positive, can-do attitude with the ability to inspire and motivate others
• A good team player with a commitment to sharing knowledge, best-practice,
• Sound judgment, effective decision-making and personal accountability
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Knowledge of the UK political landscape and arguments surrounding the EU referendum campaign

12 Nations and Regions Campaign Managers

Role description: The Nations and Regions Campaign Managers will be accountable for the delivery of grassroots campaign activity, volunteer recruitment and stakeholder engagement in their region. Campaign Managers will work as part of the Field Operations Team to develop and deliver all of the campaign’s strategic objectives within their area. Successful applicants will also be responsible for managing and motivating a team of professional campaigners and volunteers.

ALDC, the party’s grassroots and local government campaigning organisation are also recruiting. Last month we told you that their application for a grant for development officers from the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust had been successful. Now they are recruiting for these posts in England and Wales and Scotland. You can find out the details here.

Purpose

To support and develop Liberal Democrat activists at a local level, to enable them to campaign and win local elections.

Main Responsibilities

  •   To provide guidance, support and training to Liberal Democrat activists in areas which have been identified as priorities for development which will help develop teams to have the capacity for longer term campaigning and electoral success.
  •   To help Liberal Democrat activists develop the skills and motivation to campaign effectively, and to promote the work of ALDC, through attendance at regional and local events, training and meetings.
  •   To provide cover and backup to colleagues within the ALDC team, in particular to other Development Officers.

They are also recruiting for a number of jobs at LDHQ in London.

Director of People

Strange though that job title may sound, it signifies a move towards project working involving volunteers and staff working together).

Key Responsibilities

  •   To articulate and communicate a clear vision for the Party and the team
  •   To strategically invest resources to grow the party by recruiting new members in line with the Leader’s ambition of 100,000 members
  •   To improve the membership experience
  •   To drive training to ensure that the talents of staff, key volunteers, candidates and members are deployed to the optimum level
  •   To mobilise the talents of volunteers and members
  •   To find new and innovative ways to activate and engage members, delivering g amembership experience that is engaged in campaigning, policy making and training
  •   To help drive up the representation of female, BAME and other under-represented groups at all levels of the party
  •   To ensure that the potential of parliamentary-level candidates and others in leadership positions within the party is maximised
  •   To lead and develop our digital proposition to enable the greatest number of members as possible to access training, support and community engagement both directly and as a support to key activists
  •   To work with senior political figures, including the Party leader, to ensure that the people agenda is represented at senior decision making levels.
  •   Oversee training and HR for the federal party and its employees.

Senior Press Officer

Purpose of job

The Liberal Democrats are looking for an exceptional individual who can help build and maintain the profile and credibility of the Party, by securing positive coverage in national and regional print, broadcast and online media. They will challenge and rebut opposition attack, and take a lead on the Press Office’s use of Twitter as a PR tool. The role will also involve spearheading the Party’s relationship with BME press.

Fundraising Manager

Essential Skills and Experience

1. At least 3 years of experience in major donor fundraising or similar field;
2. Confident communicator who is able to approach donors and prospects engage with them on supporting the Liberal Democrats;
3. Experience working with donors and staff at all levels and helping create consensus among multiple stakeholders;
4. Self-starter with strong organisational and project management skills;
5. Excellent writing skills and experience in developing compelling materials and communications for donors;
6. Flexibility to work some evenings throughout the year and to travel outside of London for our party conferences;
7. Sympathy with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.

Digital Content Officer

The holder of this role will generate innovative and engaging digital content for use across all web and social channels. This will include, but not be limited to, graphics, video and web articles.

They will be responsible for managing and increasing the Liberal Democrats’ engagement online, using all tools and channels available to them, specifically, but not exclusively the website, Twitter and Facebook. This also involves a clear understanding of online analytics, content and search engine optimisation. The material will take a key role in engaging with voters online and promoting Liberal Democrat messages.

Print Content Officer

Key Responsibilities
1. Take a lead role in supporting the party’s house style
2. Create print content and templates for campaigners to use or replicate across the country.
3. Work across the party, with staff and volunteers, to commission and produce materials and for party’s national campaigns
4. Create or commission photographic content for use across the party.
5. Promote Liberal Democrat messages in creative and innovative ways
6. Join project teams set up by the CEO, working with team members from other departments from across the party.
7. Ensure that there is wider understanding in the party of key messages and aims
8. Work closely with the leadership of the Party to ensure a unified approach across the whole party.

  • This list implies that either we’re not very good at retaining our staff or we’re not providing sufficient career development opportunities to fill some of these roles internally. I suspect it actually means both.
