Well, just three results yesterday, as far as we’re aware. And to be honest, none of them were particularly exciting from a Liberal Democrat perspective.
In deepest Cambridgeshire, Fenland District Council has been a bit of a one-party (Conservative) state in recent years, and only relatively recently have Liberal Democrats made an impression, picking up four council seats. But UKIP have a strong presence in the Fens so, in a three way contest, there was a possibility of an upset in Parson Drove & Wisbech St Mary ward, where we had achieved a 38% share of the vote in 2011.
However, it was UKIP who will probably be most pleased with the outcome, albeit that they came third with nearly 25%. The Conservatives were down just 8% to 44%, and the Liberal Democrat candidate, Helen Lane, hung on to second place with 28%.

In Harwich West, in Tendring, there was some optimism, with Simon Banks and the team having worked hard in a Labour-held ultra-marginal seat we didn’t fight in 2011. A fourth place finish doesn’t reflect the effort put in, but 17.7% is a good showing and a stepping stone towards 2015.

And finally… Evelyn ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. Such a seat was never likely to be promising, given that we had come second in a six-cornered contest with just 17% of the vote, as opposed to Labour’s 55%, in 2010. And so it turned out, with the only serious opposition to Labour on the night being the People Before Profit candidate, who managed a very respectable 24%, whilst the Labour vote held steady. The remaining votes were split three ways, with Bill Town staying just ahead of the Conservative and UKIP candidates, who tied for fourth.

Finally, if there’s anything I missed at town or parish level, do add it via the comments.

We had a by election in Chester on Mar 21st. In the Upton Park ward of Upton by Chester and District PC the result was as follows:
Eliza Austin Lea (Con): 96
Nick Dixon (Labour): 70
Jean Evans (Lib Dem) 132
There was a 42 PE cent turnout.
Congratulations, Jean and enjoy being a parish councillor!
We did come third in the simultaneous town council race in Harwich West, but that was because a large number of Community Representatives’ votes went to Labour, pulling the Community Reps down to fourth. Their district council candidate was the former Labour MP’s brother, which accounts for their pulling in some basically Labour voters, if only by confusion.
I actually never thought we’d win, but yes, it was a bit disappointing but a good start.
Basically, at present we’re not doing well where we aren’t well dug in and strong. Where we are strong, we’re doing fine.
