Christmas is coming early to the Oldham East and Saddleworth by-election campaign!

The campaign managers have just appointed me the official ‘Head of Christmas’ for the campaign and I wanted to let you know how you can join in the Christmas fun.

The campaign is already in full swing, but we need your help now. You can find the HQ at http://www.ElwynWatkins.co.uk/pages/help-us-win.html.

If you join the campaign this weekend, on Sunday you can join us for Christmas Dinner and the unveiling of our campaign Christmas Tree. Bring a decoration and help us to get the campaign in the Christmas spirit!

Christmas Dinner is supplied by Ravenstone Caterers next door to the HQ. We’ve also arranged for a pint of Real Ale from our other neighbour, the Greenfield Real Ale Brewery. Of course, there are soft drinks available for drivers and those who aren’t a fan of Real Ale.

You can book your Christmas Dinner for this Sunday (12th December) at www.oldhamxmasdinner.ldpeople.org.uk. It’s only £12 for a full Christmas Dinner and pint of Real Ale – that can’t be bad!

With Polling Day likely to be early in the New Year we need your help before Christmas. So, please help us get our Christmas campaign off to a flying start this weekend.

Cath Smith

PS As the Head of Christmas I wanted to talk just about the Christmas fun, but I’ve been told I have to say that with just 103 votes between us and Labour it’s a close fight and every vote will count. Please come and help as much and as often as you can.

Remember, you can book your Christmas Dinner online at www.oldhamxmasdinner.ldpeople.org.uk.

A tip for your by election candidate…don’t go signing any pledges.

    class!

If the campaign’s anywhere near as creative as the ways we’re being asked for help, we’re on with a good chance…

    (yes I know I haven’t been yet)

  • Well – it’s good to see what Lib Dem priorities are today! It appears that you all have no idea of the strength of feeling out there on what you have done. Bring on these elections – maybe you will all appear more humble the day after the polls close!

The party’s going down the toilet but never mind, there’s lashings of mince pies and ginger beer all round! Spiffing!

It might be a little crass to hit out at a young campaigner, guys. No, I wont be going. No, I can’t stomach Elwyn Watkins and believe his approval panel must have been in the toilet while he gave his answers. No, I can’t stomach the vote from yesterday and think that Liberal Youth have no business helping out the party, epecially a candidate who is dodgy on the pledge….but none of that is Cath’s fault. She has chosen, for her reasons, to work hard at the campaign and is promoting it via her christmas avenue – fair play to her. Go, don’t go, either way don’t yell at the young campaigners for doing something.

There is everything to play for in Oldham East and Saddleworth.

The tour de force debutant President Tim Farron on R4`s `Any Questions’ tonight from Kendal bodes well for both an increase in Election votes and a rise in Christmas spirits for all L/D campaigners.

A key election campaign message is that 64% of the 2010 L/D Mainifesto was integrated into the `Coalition Agreement’ and in that chunk of post `22 Days in May’ progressive policy there is much to champion to stir the cockles..

Of course it’s not Cath Smith we should be angry with. But I’ve had to give up too because after this lot I just don’t have the stomach for it now. I admit at first I thought we’d really done something positive, in a bizarre kind of way, but I didn’t join so that we could lie to people just like all the rest of them do just to get power. Seeing Nick Clegg, and even Vince, It makes me think of Animal Farm now, when the pigs get in the beds.
I listened to a Radio 4 programme about OE&S this week, it proved how Labour was doing awful things and deserved all they got, but then it asked Elwyn why he is also sending out misleading material as we speak and he just turned defensive and evasive. Why can’t we of all people stop this shabby nonsense?
Good luck all the same Cath,

  • You know my views on the fees vote but whatever your views on the issue, Oldham East and Saddleworth is where every Liberal Democrat should be spending the next few weeks. those of us with long memories recall the disaster of the merger… and then saw the by-election wins in Eastbourne and Ribble Valley pull us out of the rut, more recently we confounded everyone by winning Dunfermline in 2006 after the leadership crisis. Older members will remember that even at the height of the Thorpe scandal (and no one is accusing Nick of shooting any dogs!) we won the Edge Hill by election in 1979. Lets not pretend that we’ve had a good week, but if you love the Party and you want to feel proud to be Lib Dems then get yourself to Oldham now, Time stop whingeing and start winning.
    Cheers
    Tim

I never thought I would write something like this, but I don’t think a good result in Oldham is in the best long term interest of the Party. With no elections next May in my area I am going to limit myself to campaigning for AV for the time being.

“A key election campaign message is that 64% of the 2010 L/D Mainifesto was integrated into the `Coalition Agreement’”

I find the idea that any more than about 0.001 per cent of voters would be even vaguelyl interested in the content of that statement quite bizarre. If Elwyn and his team were reliant upon it to gain victory then they would be seriously doomed.

  • @ Tim
Time to stop whingeing and start winning.
    …………………………………………………..
Ouch Tim that souded like something Nick might have said. I suspect many party members wonder what they are trying to ‘win’ there are a whole raft of Thacherite policis coming up attacking the Unemployed The Disabled etc. Some of them in neither manifesto.
I couldn’t agree more with paul pettinger that a good result would give allow Clegg free reign on the neo con agenda. Such a tricky situation actually hoping your party of 25 years does badly for a while (which is why I left it a few weeks ago) . But if you are not going to have more deserters for goodnes sake give soicial liberals some kind of hope, rather than just telling them not to whinge.

You are probibly the reason many of them still are members .!!

  • Best of luck to Elwyn and the team. I won’t be going to help as I’ve plenty of Christmas campaigning to do around here in Bradford, for the council and for Y2FV, not to mention a particularly bruising Thursday last week.
