The count in tonight’s East Barnet (London) council by-election has been postponed due to snow.
Snow may have stopped the counting, but it didn’t stop the delivering!

The Lib Dems said it was, you gussed it, a two-horse race. No doubt you thrashed Labour and stole many votes from the Tories – as you predicted. Anyone have the result to prove this claim?
Conservative: 1666
Labour: 1025
Lib Dem: 552
Green: 147
Can’t win ’em all!
Losing here!
It’s rather pathetic that people like 2-horse have such an empty life that they have to hang around a forum for a party they hate and make stupid, snide comments….
‘Hay’ 2-horse, go trot round your own field, or do us a favor and emulate Barbaro!
Snow may have stopped the counting, but it didn’t stop the Libdems losing!
Can’t win ’em all…not winning too many either
C’mon you Tories / Labour – pile in 🙂 We’re grown up enough to know that you can’t win every election. Our team were up at 4am delivering leaflets in the blizzards on polling day – that’s how much they care about the democratic process. Big up the lib dem team in East Barnet!
What a sad f**k two horse race is.
Colin, that’s just not necessary.
Thanks, Rob.
Yes Colin – it’s obvious too-hoarse isn’t a sad f**k – that’s probably his problem, no f**k at all
C’mon guys. We put up a good fight, but we didn’t win this one. Let the Tories have their moment. We’ll get ’em next time.
You didn’t just lose you lost decisively and even got beaten by Labour!
Up at 4am – why, if you were any good at your job you would have realised you had not got a chance and would have stayed in bed!
You are right: “It’s a two horse race” between Labour and Tory – normal service has been resumed.
Uh-huh. Don’t get carried away. We won a by-election in Cornwall on the same day. As for “normal service” – do you really believe the electorate want a return to polarised two-party politics?
Well, now you know how the rest of us feel! Fed up of “Focus” leaflets using dodgy bar charts and telling us that it’s a “Two-horse” race when it is indeed the Lib Dems who can’t actually “win here”
…and yet we do, regularly!
Just how many councillors do you have Vs. Labour and the Tories?
I’ve no idea – go and do your own research! 🙂
The Tories really do have to worry about UKIP. Why vote for the pale-blue Cameron PR puffball when Mr Farage offers the real thing? Powell, Nabarro, Thatcher and Tebbit. Those are the kind of politicians Tory voters admire. Two-horse included, I shouldn’t doubt.
“Just how many councillors do you have Vs. Labour and the Tories? ”
After 2006 locals the total number of councillors per party was: Con 8,482 councillors; Labour 6,105; LD 4,708; SNP+Plaid 368; Others 2,229.
After defections and byelections held since May 2006, the
figures should have changed a bit, but not by much.
The highest number of LD councillors was achieved in 1996 (over 5,000 councillors)
You appear to be in terminal decline. How many of those councillors will be lost in May?
No, it’s Two-horse’s mental health that is in terminal decline. The men in white coats are walking up the drive. Let’s just hope the straitjacket fits.
“You appear to be in terminal decline.”
In terms of total councillors, after thw 1996 peak, the Libdems started to go down until 2002. Then they increased their councillors number in 2003 and 2004 and then stayed pretty much stable.
In terms of % of total councillors, LD didn’t see great movements after their 1996 peak: they always held between 20% and 22% of the total number of councillors in the last decade.
It’s a two horse race – could you drop me an e-mail please? [email protected]
But if I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times … it is just embarrassing when we claim to be able to win and then get humiliated. We should only claim it when it is true, which it clearly wasn’t here. The people of Barnet didn’t believe us and I’m sure a lot of people won’t. I feel the “2 horse race” and “only we can beat Lab/Con” line has run its course. As too has “winning here”. Can’t we grow up as a party and find a slogan that reads less like “we’re the party that can beat the party you don’t like much.”
Hmmm. I’m not completely disputing what you say, but I think you’d have said “don’t use those messages” in Dunfermline, where we went in fourth and ‘couldnt possibly win’, but did. Ditto Bromley & Chis, where we came very close.
When have we been humiliated? Losing a council by-election isn’t an humiliation.
too hoarse – to hearse
“I’m not completely disputing what you say, but I think you’d have said “don’t use those messages” in Dunfermline, where we went in fourth and ‘couldnt possibly win’”
In Dunfermline the Libdems were second. It’s in Moray where they were 4th at the start and they claimed their canvassing returns showed them head to head with SNP (result: 1)SNP 2)Con 3)LD)
“Ditto Bromley & Chis, where we came very close”
The funny thing is that I don’t recall the Libdems hyping their chances in Bromley with “we can win” claims when they would have been true!
Totally agree with H-Lad.
On the other hand claiming to be doing better than you are at a by-election is hardly a heinous political crime, is it?
As the Lib dem agent in East Barnet, I think I can comment on the campaign with some authority. We knew very early on that Labour were not going to win. Our canvass data indicated that it was much closer between us and Labour than it turned out to be. In fact we believed that we were in second place. We were obviously wrong. The weather certainly played a part, but in the end you just have to go with the result. We lost, but we will be back.
“We will be back”. Where? Not in East Barnet you won’t!
