Confirmed: I Want A Referendum DID pull a fast one on poll results

So, now we have it nice and clear. The “I Want A Referendum” campaign was challenged yesterday to produce the poll question and answer to justify their statement about their ICM poll:

The poll also finds that if only one question is to be asked then Liberal Democrat voters would prefer a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty to a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU.

Their answer? Neither could they produce the poll question to back-up this claim nor did they say, “Oh sorry, mistake in writing up our press release; we meant to say something different.”

  • Fair enough. What they should have said is this:

“The poll also finds that if a referendum is to be held then Liberal Democrat voters would prefer a two-question referendum – on both the Lisbon Treaty and Britain’s membership of the EU – to a referendum on membership alone.”

And they could have added that 92% would prefer Lib Dem MPs either to be told to vote for a referendum on the treaty or to be given a free vote, with only 2% supporting our current policy of abstention.

With respect, aren’t those figures more significant, and more worthy of discussion, than the accuracy of the comment quoted?

  • LDV has unfortunately become a voice for PR spin from the party centre on this issue, not a voice for the member.

I recommend that members go and read Anthony Wells site or Political Betting for an honest insight into the various polls.

“Jim” the negative cr@p you are spamming across every thread you read would have more credibilty if you had the balls to include your full name

    EU membership

See that’s what happens when you let all those POLLS come over ere.

  • Can’t comment on Jim but isn’t Political
Betting run by a Lib Dem who posts insightful pieces on this site.

Anthony Wells is also a good [and impartial] guy.
There are serious faults with our poll on this and since it has been widely reported and commented on, it is silly to pretend otherwise.
At least answer the case that has been made rather than pretending the issue doesn’t exist.

  • All this shows the limitations of polls and referenda – the results are only as good (or bad) as the question asked…

We need a representative parliamentary democracy – all three of those words are important.

Our poll may have had flaws but there is at least an advantage in having a response to the ‘polls’ carried out by @I want a referendum’ better than the non response of the Govt.

  • Ross- have you got a new job since Alex Salmond (and the good voters of Gordon) gave the political smackdown to the multi coloured cardie wearing Nora Radcliffe?! PS: you don’t share the same taste in apparel as Nora do you?!
