Liberal Democrat candidate for Oxford West and Abingdon Layla Moran was on Channel 4’s political slot tonight talking about apprenticeships. She interviewed apprentices, including Paige McConville, the 2 millionth apprentice. She also interviewed business owners who told her of the high value training apprentices receive and how having apprentices benefits us all as they provide the skills the economy needs to grow.
You can watch it here:
Nick Clegg talked about launching a lifeboat for a lost generation way before the 2010 election. We’ve delivered something practical that benefits everyone and given young folk real opportunities.
Compare and contrast with the Conservatives whose harsh approach would mean that just because you’re young, you would have to do community work just to get benefits. So if you lose your job through no fault of your own, you are immediately put at a disadvantage by having to work for your already lower rate of benefit. Looking for work is a full time job in itself. Rather than provide opportunities for people, the Tories yet again show they are about punishing and scapegoating people. We saw that with their ridiculous and cruel ideas about penalising those with addictions and obesity at the weekend. It was good to hear Norman Lamb condemn the plans so roundly on Pienaar on Politics on Radio 5 Live. He was full of the cold, bless him, but he was adamant that this was a terrible idea that would ultimately be counter-productive.

I watched this PPB after Ch4 News last night.
Layla Moran came across very well. She was maybe a bit too “jolly” at the beginning but my guess is that the impression on the average viewer will have been positive. The impression on viewers in her constituency will be even more so as they will recognise the college and other locations.
This is SO MUCH BETTER than anything with Clegg in !
The secret to broadcasting success in this General Election will be to —
Keep candidates like Layla on screen and send our dear leader to a hidden trappist monastry in North Korea for70 days.
The trivial pursuit question for this Election will be which political party used Gracie Fields ‘ Thing-ummy-Bob in a PPB?
Risky but inspired.
I thought she was great! Labour and the Tories are trying to claim this as their own idea so we need to trumpet this and she trumpeted amazingly.

Yes – my ears picked up on Gracie Fields as well. I wonder how many others did?
I can’t see Labour or the Tories making this point in this way; distinctive, constructive not negative, collegiate, candidate- and locality-based not leader-obsessed — a cautious ‘yes’ from me.
In and of itself it might only move us in the public mind from ‘Tory whores’ to ‘nice people who got taken for a ride and don’t in the end amount to much’ but I suppose it’s a start.
John, I think the North Korean leadership probably wouldn’t approve of Trappists, as Christians and Catholics.
Indeed. They’re probable a bit better than they were when Comissioner Herbert Lord of the Salvation Army was one of many foreigners imprisioned by the North for the duration of the Korean War after they invaded South Korea. Herbert Lord’s son was the first member of management I met when I joined my first department in the BBC.
