Last year at Federal Conference in Brighton, Liberal Democrats discussed the overstretch of the British Armed Forces in one of the urgent issue slots. Most of the speakers were former members of the services or currently serving members of the reserves.
It was clear from the tone of the debate that many party members were deeply concerned at the demands being placed on our servicemen and women by a Labour Government that clearly had failed to provide the forces with the necessary equipment and support they required.
Liberal Democrat Friends of the Armed Forces is a new group, which is being launched at the Brighton Conference this year with a Fringe event on Monday, 17th September, at 6.15 pm in the Wordsworth Room in the Thistle Hotel. Speakers will include David Heath MP and Nick Harvey MP.
If you have any links to the armed forces, either through your own current or previous service or through relatives currently serving or through an interest in the welfare of service personnel, please come along to the event on Monday evening and show your support for our brave servicemen and women.

This is a sound move which could pay huge dividends should we ever decide to stage a military coup.
Please support our giftbook ‘For a Member of the Military’, part of the proceeds go to Combat Stress. The giftbook began as a one-woman venture to send a gift to our deployed troops in the Middle East and to support veterans’ charities at the same time. Thank you.
I to attended this fringe meeting, and as a retired member of HM Forces [RMP] with 23yrs service, was very heartened by what I heard,in the presence of former colleagues.
It has been my concern for many years that the Government and the general public were not providing the best support available to the serving Officer, NCO and soldier, and that something urgently needed to be done.
The LibDems have now thrown down the gauntlet by giving their support to the RBL and calling on the Government to act now. This is very welcome support, and greatly appreciated, especially to families remaining at home, whilst husbands are fighting for our country in Iraq, Afganistan, and other lesser known theatres of conflict. Log on to my Website, with over 450 serving and retired members of the Royal Military Police, a site where former friends can remain in contact on leaving the Corps.
Boris was correct when he said that Nick Clegg is a “lapdog prophylactic protection device” for David Cameron. On reflection a very prophetic comment. The rush for power clearly overcame common sense and the result of that unholy union is clear for all to see. I am now retired and I doubt if the Liberals will be a force of any consequence in my lifetime. A great shame because the Libdems didn’t deserve to be slaughtered on the altar of one mans ambition.
