We wanted to honour those Liberal Democrats that our readers felt were true stars of 2013. Over the past few days, we have sought out nominations and now have a rather impressive list, of which this is the final part, that we’ve been publishing in instalments over the past week. Here is the final part. Their names come with the comments made about the contribution they have made. Some are parliamentarians, some are councillors, most are grassroots activists. Let’s celebrate them and the many others who are fighting for Liberal Democrat values and victory. These are our Liberal Democrat stars of 2013.
You can read part 1 here, part 2 here part 3 here, part 4 here and part 5 here.
Jeanette Sunderland
For turning Yorkshire and the Humber region into a well oiled machine
Sarah Teather
For her opposition to the Legal Aid changes and her powerful advocacy on behalf of those caught up in the immigration and asylum system.
Cllr Bob Thompson
An active, lone, LibDem councillor on the Tory dominated Cheshire West and Chester Council
Mark Valladares
For relentless commitment to reasonableness in the face of lots of people’s rage.
Derek Wann
Derek was Chair of the Edinburgh North East and Leith party in 2013 and did an amazing job of providing first rate communication, organisation and calm leadership . His selfless commitment is an example to us all
Steve Webb
By common consent the best Pensions minister in living memory and the unsung hero among our ministerial team
Matt Whittles
who has a real heart for improving the lives of the World’s poorest people
Jen Yockney
Jen has been a committed party activist for more years than she’d like to admit. As the organiser for the NW regional party, she keeps the region running, maintains the website and writes the NW Campaigner newsletter for members across the region. She’s been a long-term executive member of LGBT+ Lib Dems, including a stint as Chair from 2007 where she reinvigorated the moribund organisation through engagement and communication with the membership and wider party; her attitude of setting measurable targets before expending resources and finance produced great results, and she reinforced an attitude of inclusion towards the often-overlooked parts of the LGBT+ spectrum. She’s also a committed activist in the bisexual community, editing Bi Community News and running BiPhoria, the UK’s oldest extant bisexual support and social group, in Manchester. She’s organised the annual BiCon and many smaller events and activist weekends. Her constant dedication to the party, willingness to provide helpful advice based on experience, and level-headedness coupled with a dry wit make Jen a true Lib Dem star.
One Comment
I would like to see the L/D front-bench in government champion Steve Webb`s dynamic contribution, as Pensions Minster more so as the central author of the `Triple Lock’, in the likely pre-Election brick-bats when Tories are claiming full credit and capable of misleading the British electorate.
How the next Government -post May 2015-of whatever hue and commitment to social issues, will cope with the rising cost of Energy and Housing and remaining physically active and pensioners, in the in the 21st C, will largely depend on the continuation of progressive Pension planning invented and led by the innovatory Steve Webb L/D Pensions Team.
