Kirsty Williams would ‘”be very happy” to see a Lib Dem Secretary of State for Wales. As she says in an interview with Wales Online, under the Coalition the party has produced three Scottish Secretaries.
Having Liberal Democrats as secretaries of state gives us the best possible chance of wrestling power out of Whitehall and giving it to Wales.
She reflects on the devolution of the NHS Budget to Manchester.
You know, the fact that that kind of responsibility can be passed down without any referendum at all and here in Wales [at] each step of the devolution pathway we have to have a referendum… The irony of that is not lost on me.
She admits that a time spent in opposition in Westminster would make life easier, but …
Opposition is easy but I got into politics to get things done and although being in opposition is easy it hampers your ability to make a difference and I would much rather be in a position to see Liberal Democrat policies being implemented than not. So, yes, of course it would be a much easier life for us if we were in opposition [but] it would stop our ability to get things done and I think it would be bad for the country and what potentially we would have is a Government in Westminster, if it didn’t have Liberal Democrats, that would either be economically illiterate or wouldn’t give a damn about social justice – and it’s only by having Liberal Democrats in that Government in Westminster that we can secure Wales’ future [by] making sure we’ve got economic policies that continue to secure the recovery but at the same time is determined to make sure we live in a fairer society.
So that is a price worth paying for me, even if it makes my life a little bit more difficult.
