LibLink: Veronica German – A healthier option

Over on the Wales Home website, Veronica German, Assembly Member for South Wales East up to the recent dissolution of the Assembly and candidate for that seat, has written a piece setting out the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ policies for the NHS.

Here’s an excerpt:

We need a modern NHS, that is worthy of our time – which is cost-effective, efficient and delivers better services. The more money we save by cutting inefficiencies, the more we can spend on delivering the best possible services for you and your family.

Welsh Liberal Democrats will cut waiting times by investigating claims of ineffective spending in the NHS and diverting this funding to the frontline.

The Labour-Plaid Government has refused to investigate the claim by an NHS Finance Director that £1 billion of the NHS Wales budget is “not being used optimally”. That huge sum could be spent more effectively to provide urgently needed better treatment.

We’ll Improve care for the elderly and vulnerable by ensuring people can choose the care package they want, when they want it. We believe that social care must ensure people are looked after in ways appropriate to their needs and maximising their independence.

We will increase the use of Personal Budgets for care services – allocating a budget that people can control themselves. They can then decide how to spend this to meet their care needs and achieve agreed outcomes, in line with a personalised support plan.

We believe a comprehensive cancer plan is essential. Thanks to the Labour-Plaid government we’ve been left with a cancer service that trails behind England and the rest of Europe. We’ll deliver a cancer strategy that works for the people it serves, using money currently in the NHS budget to fund the most effective medicines and therapies. Better facilities will help cut waiting times and improve patients’ quality of life. We believe that when it comes to cancer the service shouldn’t stop when the treatment stops, which is why we will develop a cancer strategy that delivers from diagnosis, treatment through to remission or palliative care. We will fund support groups, and better advice and information about cancer so that no one suffers alone.
