The Spectator’s annual Parliamentarian of the Year Awards ceremony took place last night.
Nick Clegg was named as the magazine’s Politician of the Year, while Danny Alexander and George Osborne were awarded Best Double Act.
The Mail has the photos, and Standard diarist Olivia Cole reports David Cameron’s topical joke:
Best was his line on the “spectacular” coupling. “I can’t believe,” he said, “that someone middle class, from the Home Counties, could get together with someone so wealthy whose family own a string of mansions.”
Not Kate … he was talking about his beautiful relationship with Nick Clegg. Touché.
You can read the full list of winners here.
Update: The Spectator has now posted video of the event here.

What jolly black-tie fun.
As if the student protests weren’t bad enough, now this happens.
“Danny Alexander and George Osborne were awarded Best Double Act.”
Oh lord, this is going to be a long five years, isn’t it?
It has to be a ventriloquist act. I suppose the fact that Alexander was wearing a kilt must have made thing easier.
You couldn’t make it up.
Of course the Tories adore Nick Clegg!

“Of course the Tories adore Nick Clegg!”
Not some of the ones I’ve spoken too 😮
“Oh lord, this is going to be a long five years, isn’t it?”
Not if I’ve got anything to do with it!
Intersting, and perhaps revealing, that Clegg’s “award” gets scarcely a mention from the far right who seem to make up most of the commenters on “The Spectators” webpage. They reserve their venom for Caroline Lucas as “Newcomer of the Year” and Ed Balls as “Parliamentarian of the Year”.
I’m sorry that they did not have an award for Speaker of the Year; only two to choose from, but what a contest!
the spectator – paper of the radical right – no wonder!
From left of centre radicals to darlings of the right wing press. Probably the biggest change of direction since a guy called Saul was going to Damascus……..
How proud they must be.
Frivolous question: why wasn’t David Cameron wearing a Tuxedo?
Are these comedy awards?
Guys – Ed Balls and Green leader Dr Lucas also got awards from this ‘paper of the radical right ‘
…and David Young got Peer of the Year – go figure
