Nick Clegg’s Letter from the Leader: “No one campaigns like we do”

With local elections taking place across much of England (and, lets not forget, the Isle of Angelsey in Wales) on Thursday 2nd May, Nick Clegg’s letter this week focuses on the drive to get out the Lib Dem vote…

The buzz at party headquarters this Thursday night was great. Danny Alexander and I were there along with well over 50 others for an action evening on the phones, campaigning for this year’s local elections on 2 May. The building was full of noise, people coming and going, and a fair amount of pizza too!

nick clegg on phoneBetween us, and the volunteers joining in up and down the country, we made literally thousands of calls, getting our message out to voters in every corner of England.

It’s easy to help our candidates across the country by making calls, either from home or from one of our campaign HQs and we’ll be having action evenings every week this month. Click here to find out how to take part.

The highlight of my evening was speaking to a voter in Cornwall who hasn’t voted Lib Dem since the days of David Penhaligon (for those who don’t know, a legendary Cornish MP who died tragically in 1986) – but is thinking of doing so again this year. Our campaign for a stronger economy in a fairer society is really starting to get through.

Of course, the coming weeks won’t be easy. Our opponents are going to throw everything at us (they haven’t forgotten Eastleigh!) But when this party gets organised, no one campaigns like we do and we have a strong story of our own to tell – delivering for people locally and now in national government too.

In elections across the country, people will be confronted with the same choice. At the end of the day a vote for Labour or the Tories this May is a vote for the same thing. Their record in local government shows that, even when millions of families are feeling the pinch, they’ll both squander taxpayers’ money on waste, inefficiency and their own vanity projects.

How else can you explain a former Conservative council leader in Leicestershire spending over £200,000 on a personal chauffeur? Or Derby’s Labour-run council choosing to fund street posters passing all the blame for their cuts on to the Coalition Government – costing thousands of pounds – while looking to make drastic cuts to homelessness services?

A vote for the Liberal Democrats, on the other hand, is a vote for a party which always does its best to govern fairly, invest in jobs and help for hard-pressed families.

People will only hear about our record of action if we tell them, no one will do it for us. So I need you to get our message out: the Conservatives won’t deliver a fairer society; Labour can’t deliver a stronger economy; only the Liberal Democrats can deliver a stronger economy and a fairer society, enabling everyone to get on in life.

These elections will be about priorities. The Liberal Democrats have the right priorities in tough times.

Good luck – get out there and get winning!
