Chris Davies MEP reveals how Strasbourg isn’t always good for your health

chris daviesChris Davies reveals one of the unexpected problems of the European Parliament shuttling between Brussels and Strasbourg at great expense: bed bugs. Here’s an excerpt from his latest notes:

I went to the medical centre in the European Parliament in Brussels. “I’ve had these itchy spots on my arms and legs for 6 weeks or so,” I told the doctor. “They started off like insect bites but they won’t go away.” She looked at them and asked if any new spots had appeared since the Parliament was last in Strasbourg. I told her no.

“The good news is that they are entirely harmless and non-contagious and will go away,” she said. “The bad news is that they are bed bug bites. Strasbourg is notorious for bed bugs; we get 8 cases a week here. If it’s any consolation they are bed-specific. Like everyone else in the Parliament you will have booked the same hotel 12 months in advance but so long as you don’t get the same room you may be ok.”

Great, I thought. That’s another reason for the European Parliament not to migrate from Brussels to Strasbourg every month. What’s that line about not letting the bed bugs bite?

  • Welcome to the club, I have been bitten by bed bugs twice out of three times I was staying in Brussels. Yet, I have been staying in Strasbourg hotels more often than I can count and never got bitten by bed bugs there.

Perhaps the European Parliament should permanently relocate to Strasbourg, MEPs then having to find appartments there and not having to stay in Hotels in Brussels either, won’t get bitten by bed bugs, neither in Brussels, nor in Strasbourg.

I can see why the moving about makes little sense. However, I find it is impertinence of MEPs to automatically assume that a single seat should automatically mean Brussels. There is already too much power accumulated in Brussels. It would be better for the EP to not be located in Brussels. Anywhere else will be fine with me. Maybe it should go to Athens to give the Greek economy a bit of support.
